How many independant forex traders are there?

This is a simple question but the answer might be very hard to find. I’m talking about people like you and I who try to trade forex for ourselves. If anyone has an idea then please let me know, and state what your source was, or how you came to the estimate.
A figure that involves traders interested in other things would be acceptable, too (i.e. not just forex traders).

That’s something that changes everyday.
In a market that’s decentralized and global, how would you ever be able to find out?

everyone needs a broker, and brokers will keep records of how many customers they have, so it is at least possible for someone to find out, somehow.

I just want a rough idea.

Or how many people have ever tried trading (and are not neccessarily still active)?

also depends on how you define the term “trader”…is a person who travels to foreign countries a few times a year a trader? i trade currency online through a broker, but some international business people probably do more forex trades in a year than i do.
