Euro down against dollar

BERLIN (AP) — The 16-nation euro is down slightly against the dollar ahead of the upcoming G-20 meeting and a rates decision from Washington.

The euro bought $1.2314 in morning European trading Tuesday, down from $1.2324 the night before in New York. The British pound is down to $1.4734 from $1.4762, while the dollar is up to purchase 90.75 Japanese yen from 90.99 in New York.

The euro has risen from a four-year low below $1.19 on June 7 amid encouraging signals about the global economy and Europe’s debt crisis.

Markets were looking ahead to this weekend’s summit of the Group of 20 leading economies and the U.S. Federal Reserve’s decision on interest rates.

Traders also were waiting for a survey on business confidence later in the day from Germany, Europe’s largest economy.
