Is it ok to run computer 24-hours-a-day?

Well there is a difference between running computer everyday and keeping it run for 24 hours continuously.

My laptop runs 24/5. Run maintenance on Saturday for an hour or so and then turn off till on Monday!

TBH if I need my PC to work 24/5 because of any expert advisor I would prefer to pay 25-30$ per month for a VPS so I don’t have to think about overheating, power cuts, automatic restarts because of any updates etc.

Powercuts can be a problem, but a computer with a proper fan and heatsink shouldn’t overheat. As for the update, you can always change the setting to choose when your computer should update itself.

Yeah dianajs I agree with you. You could also buy a UPS to avoid issues with power cuts. Maybe there is also a way to prevent internet issues of your internet provider. In the end, there are too much factors you should be on the alert for and one easy solution for all of them (or at least minimizing the risk).

P.S. I am not a VPS provider Lol  and I don’t use VPS. I am just expressing my opinion on the topic

It depends on what you are doing at that time, you could just sit in with your trades open and doing nothing else, nothing would happen to the computer so there is constant power supply. I say this because we know with a desktop computer there might be lose of current memory when there is power interruption.

hehe. did you really

i am an I.T. Specialist
i’m an Engineer Actually

this is not technically accurate information that you have been given.

it depends on a few things.
firstly

a Windows computer cannot run indefinitely without being shutdown at some point,
a Linux Machine on the hand, can

then we consider where is your computer and how ventilated is it , or how hot or dusty does it get.
meaning… do you have it under a desk on the carpet with only 1 fan inside it and is it dusty as hell , and you never bothered to blow the dust out
or… does it have proper ventilation and adequate cooling.

beyond that computer specs come into it
also how many monitors do you have
what sort of power supply, what load capacity
where do you live in the world, how much power do you draw

but in short i can say this
i use both linux and Windows

my Windows system is running 6 Monitors
i have an i7 CPU
i have 16GB Ram
4 x 4TB Hard Drives
i use Active Cooling in my system , i have 1 CPU fan and 3 Case Fans
My computer is well ventilated as i check it for dust around once a month

i find i can keep my computer running for months without issue
but as a general rule of thumb
if my windows system is running for 3 days 24/7 or 24/3 if your prefer
i will restart it

but on a day to day trading basis, i like to screen record my trades
and i let the recording software run overnight while i’m sleeping
so the system is ON 24 hours literally

in the morning, i grab my coffee
i stop the recording
i restart the computer and i start trading again

so… i like to restart it every day if possible
but 3 days max

oh also,
over night, i turn off my monitors

now my linux system has 2 monitors, and similar hard ware to the last system
same deal
every day if possible
but i know with the linux system i can leave it and nothing will happen

the majority of my trading happens from the linux computer ,
the windows computer is mainly for news and calenders and emails and other stuff that i don’t to be part of trading or the recording on the screen

As a full time Forex trader, I use my laptop for 16-17 hours in everyday! On the other hand, I also active on mobile trading and tab trading feature! Usually, I am not interested on bad market! Then I open my previous monthly trading history to identify my trading problems! Whatever, Forex market is open for 24 hours, that doesn’t mean professional Forex traders don’t enjoy their time with their family and friends!

Certainly. It’s good to have downtime and to relax when you’re not trading. If anything that helps with being able to focus on actual trading with a rested mind and fresh eyes.

If our trading strategy allows us to run the computer maximum then we should do it but unnecessary running of computer 24 hours a day will be costly and I think we should avoid to do the trading all the time we should do trading in selected time.

For BT broadband customers in the UK with a home hub - always leave your home hub turned on.

A while back my broadband speed dropped to ridiculously low levels, 0.26Mbps download, 0.88Mbps upload. A BT engineer eventually came to the house and did tests, finding out that the line broadband capacity had been capped by the phone exchange software. This was due to me turning the router off at night, as it was on the same power supply as the PC. Apparently the exchange pings the line periodically to check broadband still required - sometimes if it gets no response because the router is off, it will assume the line is redundant and cap it. Its a common glitch and its BT’s fault, but easily avoided by leaving the router on, even if you do turn the PC off.

Trust me I leave my PC at work and laptop at home for a decade on average non stop.

Update -

It seems you need to re-set the router every few months by turning it off for a few minutes and then on again, otherwise websites and content load more and more slowly to the PC.
Doh!

In that case I would also recommend regularly clearing out your temporary internet files. I do so at least once a week and I notice visible difference before and after.

Thats the problem with porn, haha

Couldn’t resist

I understand (from a younger male acquaintance) that pornography is available on the internet. Of course, I cannot believe such a thing would be allowed.

This is what I do. It costs about $30 per month for my VPS which IMHO is well worth it.

The pain in the ass of running a computer 24/5 thats devoted to trading via expert advisor just isn’t worth it. You need to factor in power usage, dust removal maintenance, the initial cost of the computer plus any UPS hardware. Then theres the cost involved if a power spike kills the computer or a component in it. Or if a component such as power supply or hard drive dies just through excessive run time. Combine all that with the problems that can be caused with your expert advisor if the power or internet goes out.

A decent VPS will have a lot of redundancy built in that practically eliminates all these issues.

  1. Anyone that knows anything about electronics will tell you that turning your computer on and off is harsher on the componentry than leaving it running for large amounts of time…fact.

  2. Set Win 7,8,10 to not update automatically and do all updates outside market open ie: weekends…easy.

  3. Yes… installing a VPS and having a Laptop with 4G WiFi (with mirrored settings) close by is an insurance policy against failure…easy

  4. Invest in SSD’s for all your data storage with auto backup setup. Less moving parts to fail…easy.

  5. Set your monitor to power save when your away from the screen… by far the biggest power user on your desk and your chipset and graphics cards will run way cooler when the screen is asleep…easy

  6. Most IT companies will leave systems (Mac and PC) running for 24/5 for reasons above…check.

Only selected time trading can give us the benefit and we should not stick with computer 24 hour are day, we should make the planning and should trade according to the planning, trading all the time can be dangerous, so be careful.

you can use a vps server and place an EA in there.
