Default more carry over questions

ok, this isn't sinking in...can someone help explain the following:

if you're trying to make money on the carry over, i don't understand how you could make money if the market moves against you...it seems like you would lose more money on the trade, no? (I vaguely remember seeing someone post that he/she still made money on the interest even though the market moved against them)

Also, if that is the case wouldn't it be less risky to buy at "night" (i am EST) or when only 1 market is opened, since the market, from what i have observed (I am fairly new though), consolidates (i guess as long as you get your transaction in before they consider it being held overnight, right?)
