Being familiar with the general trend is only one part of my trading strategy and I’m trading with the trend sometimes but also I’m trading reversals. It all comes to the trader’s personal strategy.
Trend is one of the trickiest things I feel to really describe.

Well, simply follow up by asking them- Have you ever shorted gold?
If they answer yes, well, then sorry my friend you have traded counter trend.

You could be trading the 15 mins chart trend based on the last few days but be trading against the daily trend for example.
Most people will usually refer to the prevailing trend (big time frames) when they say they only trade with the trend.
