Two tracks of the same song — Kris Kristofferson’s [I]Me and Bobby McGee[/I]
— one from the album [I]Pearl[/I] (1971) by Janis Joplin (1943-1970),
— and a studio session by Pink (Alecia Beth Moore) in 2003.
Janis Joplin performed [I]Me and Bobby McGee[/I] at Woodstock (1969), and in other venues in 1969 and 1970. She recorded it for her album [I]Pearl,[/I] just days before her death of a heroin overdose at age 27. [I]Pearl[/I] was released in 1971, and Janis Joplin’s [I]Me and Bobby McGee[/I] posthumously became her biggest hit.
Kris Kristofferson and Fred Foster wrote [I]Me and Bobby McGee,[/I] and it was first recorded by Roger Miller. A number of rockers, and almost every country singer out there including Kris Kristofferson, have performed or recorded this song over the past 47 years.
In the original version, Bobby McGee (the male singer’s lover) was a woman. Janis Joplin changed the lyrics to make Bobby (her lover) a man. Here are the Joplin lyrics —
