Changing Pip value

I wish I would have taken screenshots, but I was just GBP/JPY and the currency on my account is USD. It seemed that the pip value changed while I was going long. For instance, when the candlestick was bull I made a certain profit, but the next candlestick went bearish and I got more profit than I had previously. I noticed it a couple times.

Is this normal? Does it change from the fluctuation from USD/JPY?

A pip is just a convenient way of measuring movement, but it’s not actually a particularly relevant way of measuring movement.

Profit and loss depends on %Delta, or change expressed as a percentage. Ignoring leverage, if you hold USD against the EUR and the dollar doubles in value, you double your money, irrespective of how many pips were actually involved.

This means that the value of each pip changes as the price changes. The lower the price, the fewer pips there are, and the more each individual pip is worth, because it makes up a larger percentage of the total price. Conversely, as price goes up, there are more pips, so the value of each pip goes down.

If the value of a pip never changed, we wouldn’t need those fancy pip value calculators!
