Charting Economic Surprises in the Majors - January 2007

The dollar registered a small gain in January, as surprisingly strong growth of 3.5% cast aside any speculation on Fed rate cuts anytime in the first half of 2007. Nevertheless, not all was sanguine as traders attempted to figure out if the better than expected US growth was simply the result of unseasonably warm weather and tumbling oil prices. With crude now once again within striking distance of $60/bbl while temperatures approach the single digits of Fahrenheit, the dollar bullish scenario is sure to be tested.
