How do pro-trading bots buy in a trade with bigger amounts of money while not losing too much percentage?

I know they buy in chunks but how? Do they use ranges where they buy? Do they adjust the amount to the 24h volume?

Of course the trade-off is between not loosing too much percentage and not having the price run away from u.
