How often do you trade as a day trader? Is 1 or 2 trades a day normal?

The right answer is the right answer for your chosen style and strategy.

Scalping is done on very short time-frames so lots of opportunities through the day. Many daytraders look only to capture the main thrust of price movement, bullish or bearish, and that of course means once per day. Some just use a strategy such as opening range breakout, which inherently means one trade per day just after the open.

True.
It depends on a trader’s strategy.

Normally 1 or 2 good moves is good for me

I see two different meanings to “day trading”. Firstly there is what one could loosely call “intraday” trading which suggests a lot of short, quick trades, scooping maybe 5-10 pips per trade, and are usually based on 1min - 15min timeframes (maybe even tick charts). These are literally confined within the working hours of the day and could maybe number around 10-20 trades per day?

Alternatively, there are day traders whose trades are based more often on 1 - 4 hour timeframes and last maybe from 1 to 24 hours and can sometimes run overnight - but not over weekends.

My trading is in the latter group and number about 30-40 per month so with about 20 trading days per month that is around 1-2 per day on average. The 2 trades tend to be based on one trade in the London market and another in the NY market. But when there is a clear sign of an ongoing trade from the London timezone then, of course, I let it run for the rest of the day and it forms just one trade.

But it should be the markets that define the number of trade opportunities, not the statistics!

Depends really on your strategy and how volatile the market is. In March/April I was making 25+ trades per day across all my accounts. I was doing less FX and more equity, commodity, bitcoin trading. In May I’m down to 10+ as the markets have calmed quite a bit. Bottom line if your in the groove keep the momentum going. At least that works for me

When we are using a Balanced Trading strategy then we have to look at our trading goals and then see if we have any new trading opportunities available with us to do our trading.
