Hurricane Florence heading for east coast of US - Now CAT1

Anybody else worried about this storm, Florence, making its way to towards the east coast? Currently a CAT 3, it will soon hit warmer waters and get caught below some system further north. Should be a major hurricane sometime later today (Monday). South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia have already declared states of emergency.

Queue the bread, milk and propane runs!

From the National Hurricane Center

Three hurricanes are headed this way –

Severe wind is forecast for No. Carolina and surrounding states –

Maximum winds are up to 90 mph/145 kph now. Landfall is early Thursday (8am) somewhere along the East Coast.

Not looking forward to this.

Forget that! I’m in Maryland. Looks like I’m working from home that day lol

It’s now a CAT4 storm, reaching the 130MPH requirement! Carolina landfall on Thursday is likely.

The different models agree on:

  1. Carolina landfall
  2. Inland stall
  3. Devastating flooding possible

And Florence is up to 140 MPH! She’s mad!

I might get some wind and rain out of this one. Hatches battened down, ship shape and Bristol fashion.

— heading for Cape Fear, North Carolina (sadly, that’s an appropriate name, in this case).

Hurricane tracks updated. Now moving more W and potentially S and SW.

Check the track, this thing is moving in an unconventional way!

I heard that Florence could still be in W North Carolina on Sunday/Monday. Very slow moving. Take care of yourself.

That looks scary. Stay safe, people!

South Carolina, video of highway lanes reversed to allow for evacuation.

We will be in the VIPER bunker at the Palatial Ranch and Estate, since we are in rural wake county, we are far enough away from the coast to avoid the winds, but we will still have some flooding and Tornadoes no doubt.

The Ever Survived Andrew VIPER

Hurricane Andrew, CAT 5. Whoa!

Stay safe Viper.

Big time wave measured around Florence.

F*ck the waves. The rain will be devastating! If I understood it correctly it anywhere from 30cm to 3.2meters!

WOW!
Anyone in the affected area should evacuate. I hope you have your property insured as well.

Latest radar image from 1:40 PM ET

Landfall is projected to be at 2 AM Friday.

Stay safe!

I think the report you heard is confusing maximum projected rainfall with flooding due to storm surge.

3.2 meters of rainfall is just not possible.

The National Hurricane Center has projected maximum rainfall to be 40 inches (slightly more than 1 meter) in the worst-hit area. Most of the region threatened by this hurricane will get considerably less than 40 inches of rain.

Sea-water flooding due to storm surge (incoming 30-foot-high, wind-driven waves) is projected to be up to 11 feet deep (3.4 meters deep) over a wide area near the coast.

Calm down, it’s only a category 1 now, 90mph.
Of more concern is Typhoon Mangkhut in the Philippines, 325kph winds- I can’t even imagine how that must feel!

I remember seeing a news coverage several years back of a guy that was tying himself to a tree just before a hurricane was about to hit, just to prove that he could withstand the wind.
And to this day I am still thinking the same thing - "It’s not that the wind is blowing, it’s WHAT the wind is blowing."
P.S I’m still curious what happened to that guy…
