Metatrader 4 and Trailing Stops

I ran into this problem yesterday and think I may know why it happened but would like to confirm.

After placing an order I proceeded to add a trailing stop to the order at 75’pips’. Main reason I put ‘pips’ in quotes is because after the trade retraced what looked to be 12.4 pips against me, the order was closed.

I am using IBFX which is 5 digit so this is what I began to think. If I set the TS at a level of 75, is that really 7.5pips, or is it really 75PIPS.

Help is appreciated.

If you are using a 5 digit MT4 broker then a trailing stop of 75 is 7.5 pips.

Remember that MT4 was never designed to work with pipettes. On a 5 digit broker anything in MT4 labled as “pips” will actually be pipettes.

MT5 should begin beta testing within a few months… It will correct the problem and call pips and pipettes what they really are.

Excellent. Okay so when setting the TS I should choose custom and enter 750 for a 75pip TS?

Is there an EA that can be used instead of the built-in MT4 function?

Correct. 750 would give you 75 pip TS.

There are tons of TS EA’s floating around. A Google search should turn up dozens of them. I can’t recommend any one in particular though, since I don’t use them myself.

Also, remember that any EA will have the same problem unless they were specifically written for 5 digit brokers, and 5 digit brokers really didn’t become popular until a few months ago.

Thanks! I think I’ll just use the built in function. No use in worrying about something extra to do the same thing.

The really annoying thing is that once you get used to 5 digits and go live with IBFX the servers are 4 digit.

Now there’s something I wish I knew earlier! The question’s come up a lot which one is better but I think I like the 5 digits. Maybe that’s just because I’ve only demo’d brokers that are 5 digit.

Are there any MT4 broker’s that have demo’s with 4 digits to try out?

I’ve recently opened a demo account with ActivTrades, they have 4 digits in their Standard Account so you might want to try them out.

However, they claim that the demo account lasts only 14 days (!!) so it may or may not be what you need.
