…hardware-wise, taking a break from numbers, this post is dedicated to all those people out there, that like me; dream of one day becoming a full-time daytrader; but meanwhile have to work on a regular day job
When I started with Forex, a few months back, I couldn’t have enough PC time with so much to learn. I work in an office with a firewalled-PC. The access to the Internet is supposed to be “for business use only” and twice the IT guys threatened to tell my boss if I continued surfing the net…what a nerve, what an invasion of privacy. Big brother is watching!
 So, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I ended up getting my own VPS, for continuity purposes of ongoing trades. I played around with many laptops, and finally settle down with a 10" screen hybrid laptop, with the screen folding and becoming a tablet. I use my Verizon Wireless blackberry to power the internet at 3G speeds (phone service, unlimited internet is company-paid, yeah get back at them ;)) Once I login to my VPS, I fold my laptop - tablet style and place it under my desk, on a pull-up tray meant for a keyboard. Out of sight, out of mind. I set my trading on H1 or M30 frames. I use a candle-time left indicator, so I do my thing & I know when I have to go back and check my trading…meanwhile I go back to work…
I hope you were just being facetious about their nerve to expect their employees to respect the “business use only” policy and that you can’t really consider it an invasion of privacy to monitor what is apparently a huge problem employers face in that regard.
My employer does allow personal surfing on our own time…breaks… within reason, and as long as we get our work done and don’t spread viruses around, they pretty much leave it up to our own good conscience.
They also disabled the ability to download and install any software…which means I can’t load a trading platform. I was considering getting a mobile trading platform for a cell phone, but your idea is interesting…bigger screen too…lol.
I’m not much of a hardware person, but why do you need a VPS if your wireless laptop is tapping into the internet service of your blackberry? I have a paid monthly local phone company USB internet card that gives an allotted amount of free downloading/emailing per month, so I suppose that could work too, but do you or anyone know if streaming price feeds from the brokers is considered downloading?
Yeah, I was being facetious, but in the scheme of things in life…my Forex project comes first! I see it as my future and nobody will worry about my future but myself…not my boss.
I love VPS, mainly because I have 3 robot ea’s on demo (GT Shadow, Blackbox and Forex Funnel). Those work 24/7. Apart from that I run another MT4 for practice, plus my live account. Once you get used to VPS, you won’t go back…it is always neat to find your work as you left it, without having to re-open everything on your desktop. You might like to check datajack dot com (not sure if I can post links here). Anyways unlimited internet at 3G speeds for $39.95 a month ( I have no business interest here…just something that I tested & works)
How are you able to use your wireless laptop to tapping into the internet service of your blackberry? Could you pls provide more detail on how to do this as I’m interested in trying this as well? TIA!
My Blacberry uses Verizon Wireless service…just check your plan and make sure you get unlimited internet. Verizon Wireless brings a CD with VZ Access Manager software. Simply install & connect via cable, Blackberry to USB port. Speeds are somewhere between dialup & broadband…not bad at all. Basically you are tethering & using your phone as a modem. You can do that with many other wireless service.
