New Zealand Prime Minister John Key will seek to form a “Single Economic Market” with Australia. In a speech given to the Committee for the Economic Development of Australia (CEDA) Key laid out his vision to create a new economic bond with the its larger neighbor. He plans to “create a stronger, more connected and more streamlined trans-Tasman trade and business environment.” Near the end of his speech, the former Merrill Lynch foreign exchange trader stated that “A robust Single Economic Market gives us the extra economic strength that will help us to weather the current economic storms.” Since signing the agreement, Australia has become New Zealand’s largest trading partner and has become the country which receives the largest share of the island nation’s exports - accounting for 23% of them.
