Hello,
This is my first post on these forums. Discovered the interesting world of trading a few days ago and read through the site. Firstly I’d like to say what a wonderful job you have done of putting potentially snooze inducing information into an interesting interactive format, you deserve to profit from this skill. Secondly I’d like to give you a bit of background about myself to act as context if anyone is at all able to respond to my questions. I come from an applied linguistics background (not sure how relevant that is, lol) but I’m currently studying towards a PhD in social statistics, meaning I can understand quite advanced maths (with a bit of effort). Clearly, I have no background in economics, or I would have known more about trading before so I will not be able to understand anything with language based in fundamental economics. I have a bit of a fetish for discovering how numbers and graphs of those numbers relate to the real world. Imagine my delight when I downloaded a trail of a back-tester, all those beautiful geometric charts dancing in colorful real time for me. Anyway I’ll get to the point.
At the moment I’m not at all interested in trading at all, I’m interested in learning more about trading and performing back-tests. It seems to me 95% of google’s finds utter rubbish, and I don’t want to waste money on Amazon chasing books that are of only marginal utility. Would it be at all possible to ask the knowledgeable out there some questions? If anyone could even provide an answer to one of these I would be very grateful.
1, Could anyone recommend good back-testing software, as I am a poor student the cheaper the better. I can programmer a little so I would sacrifice user friendliness for price.
2, Could anyone recommend any trustworthy textbooks, if such things exist, which cover the basics of forex trading?
3, Does anyone know which publishing companies are reputable in this area?
4, Could anyone recommend books which goes into detail on indicators (really looking forwards to getting one of these)?
5, Does anyone know of good books on trading strategies?
6, Does anyone know of the difference between data sources, I.E. whihc ones are bet to use for back-testing?
7, Have I missed out anything important I might need to know?
Sorry to write such a demanding email, just that I think that I could get some good answers from the people who frequent these forums and perhaps the answers might be useful for others in the future.
