ScamBusters

Due to the recent proliferation and ever increasing sophistry of scammers abounding in the forex community ( perhaps due to the financial crisis we are in), I thought that I would help the FF community by creating a journal dedicated to expose their techniques and update the most recent refinement in their sophisms.

I was a victim of scammers in the past and, while I never actually lost money due to scams tactics I went through countless hours of “training” 'webinars", “tutorials” etc…etc and ended up empty.

Big waste of time and big dents in my hope of being successful in this business. After numerous failed strategy, bogus system and empty promise one starts to wonder if this whole thing is not just a big scam, and if it really is possible to actually make some money on Forex.

After going full circle and experiencing all the pain and joy that this market can bring I can say that it is possible to make a living out of it, but one has to be aware that there is not just smarter traders after your money.

Banks, brokers, hedge funds, astute traders, etc…etc, are all part of the game, and like it or not, legitimate in this market.

Now the scammer is a different kind of beast. Usually he or she is the person who can’t make money in this market. He is either too lazy to study, too undisciplined, or too plain stupid to become a profitable trader so he goes after other peoples money, especially the naive newbies.

Those perpetrators have no other thing to do but go after your account. They pose as experienced traders willing to help. Their agenda is to gain your trust, so in time, through some of the tactics I will explain later in this thread, they start the “inverse cash flow” process.

I will do my best to at least post once per day untill I lay everything I have gathered over the years about scams.

This is my way to help.

Cheers!!!

Ok…starting from the very beginning I would like to cover the kind of “soft” scam you can find all over the net. I call it soft because it is so easy to spot that the actual hard part is to figure out how people can fall for it. Did you ever receive an e-mail from somebody in Nigeria telling you about millions of dollars blocked in an American bank ready to be redeemed? Ok…the bottom line is that if you, as an American citizen just fill some paperwork the Nigerian guy is willing to share a big chunk of this money with you ( what a philanthropist). Would you fall for something like that? Well maybe not you or me but, it looks like a lot …and I mean A LOT of people have fallen for these lame vanilla Nigerian scammers, so much so that even the FBI got involved. When human greed kicks in people get really blinded and the scammer knows about this human flaw, and that’s where they take advantage. Ok…lets forget about the nigerian and take a look at some Forex soft, lame, vanilla scams on the net. Without naming any names, lets see who here has ever stumbled over headlines like the following on the net:

“over 3000 pips per month easily on Forex GUARANTEED!!!
“pivot point” secret system used by banks and big institutions”
"with our automated system you can take advantage of “leverage”
“bring a 1000 dollars account to 100,0000 in less than 3 months, no management necessary, set and forget system”
"Experienced ex bank trader reveals to you the secrets of fibonacci ( the banks secret levels)
“Make easy money, thousands of dollars per month, guaranteed
"Learn to trade like a pro with this forex guru”
“Forex easy - trade like the banks and make millions” And the headlines go on…and on…

Note that even those really lame vanilla scams all use some legitimate words of the trading world as “bait” to sound at least a little convincing . Fibonacci, leverage, pivot points, etc. All legitimate tools that pro traders really do use, just to try to sell an image. Also, words like holy grail, guarantee, easy, millions, etc…etc…are used to catch us human beings in our flaws of greed, laziness, etc. I would hope that anybody that hits FF and this thread in particular are over this first kind of scam, but just in case, there it is.

Second tier scams, are a little bit more sophisticated, have more grounds, and are “marketingwise” and “logicallywise” more elaborate. Some of them work for years because they hide themselves in the form of seminars, education, courses, signals etc. They usually exist in an environment where legitimate institutions operate, so in order to separate the “tares from the wheat” you will have to do your homework. Every so often I get friends calling me on the phone, asking me about some “Free Forex Seminar” that’s in town, which, according to them is, “the bomb” and the guy is selling his system consisting of a bunch of DVDs for only 5 grand! My answer is always in the form of a question…

If his system is so good why is he selling it? Why is he or she traveling from city to city doing all that he or she can do, to sell you something? Why isn’t he or she sitting by the side of his mansions pool, sipping a pina colada and just watching his account grow?

I’m not gonna lie to you…I worked my butt off to learn this market. My system? I don’t sell or give it to anyone. I doubt anybody with a real system will do it. Go ask the Coca Cola CEO about their secret formula. Go talk to a Hedge fund CEO and ask him about his black box system. Go to Deutschebank and try to peek into their trading strategies. If I have to help people I will help in other ways. I don’t have to give away anything that took me such hard work to acquire. I’m so not doing it. And again, honestly, I will doubt anybody who claims to be doing it. Everytime I hear about something really good for free a big red flag raises inside my mind.

If you are a newbie reading this just watch out for the cash flow direction. If something is bringing cash to your account for a steady period of time it is something you can pay attention to. It applies to everything out there. If you sign up, for example, for a live trading website ( after doing your homework about the service), and if after following the service for a few days your trades are still erratic, you are barely breaking even, or losing money, (meaning the cash flow is going inverse of it was supposed to be), let me ask you, what is the point? If something works it works right a way . It is just like a trade. When it goes your way it goes your way quick, otherwise you better get out of it. As soon as the cash flow changes direction you better get out for the sake of your hard earned money.

Well I guess we covered ( even if lightly) the first 2 forms of scams. I could spend a lot of time talking about seminars, and how those “pro” traders trade live, and are supposed to tell you how to make millions, just to go backstage during their lunch break to eat out of cardboard boxes (lol). I can tell you what most of them are up to, but what’s the point? The bottom line is money flow direction. If it’s not going in your direction, just like any trade, GET OUT !!

Next post I will start to discuss the third and most pernicious way of scamming…stay tuned!

Ok folks…I’m back here with the second post on Forex scams.

We saw last time that we should always question questionable things ( sorry about the redundancy). In the end 99% of the time logic will prevail so if something is illogically “too good to be true” it probably is. If something is too cheap to be true it probably is …etc…etc.

Another point that i would like to stress is the CASHFLOW direction. I’m gonna hammer on this all the time.

If something, or somebody , or for any reason, you are experiencing an inverse cashflow, watch out…red flag, GET OUT. Capital protection is the first rule in this game. That famous phrase of Warren Buffets’ to his traders “don’t lose money” is so important. In your trades, and in every aspect of your life, watch out for cashflow direction. You must be the one in charge of your cashflow, not anybody else. At the first red flag GET OUT.

Ok, I was going to start talking about the schemes of “retail scammers”, but in my last post, I forgot to mention another form of scam that happens very frequetly. And even if we cannot completely get away from it, all of us can do something to at least deminish it. This form of scam is the:

BROKERS SCAM TACTICS

Brokers are here, supposedly, to help us. We are their clients, and they should be here FOR US. But unfortunately, what we see is our brokers actually competing against us in the same market, but with an incredible advantage. They have more money, they have a fast and stable platform which has access to the real interbank feed, and they have access to market deep information, in such a way that we can only dream about. On top of that, their algorythms use the sum of all their constantly profitable traders and compare their positions against the sum of their constantly losing traders, and spits out some pretty accurate signals so they can go speculate in the interbank market. For more details on this go to the Oanda thread on the broker section here in FF and take a look at my past posts. As a disclaimer I should say that the info over there is for enterteinment only…so my “derriere” gets covered.

Ok so, where, actually do they scam us? Well if you are a newbie, you are probably thinking about spreads widening, slippage, and their prices compared with other brokers. While all these things are not fair, their real scam comes in the form of price manipulation inside their own platform, platform instability, and disconnections.

They speed up and delay price movements to get rid of scalpers, they freeze and flicker your platform to destabilize you psycologically, and they can even bring your whole network down so you can’t get out of a postion that just went against you. (Again for more info go to the place above mentioned.)

These people are so greedy that despite the huge amount of money they make, and the little risk they take, they still have to go after you, and play those scam tactics to mess you up on your legitimate trades.

What can you and I do about it ?

Everytime you see something that you think is suspicious. call your broker. Ask to speak to a superviser. Let them know that you are aware of their tactics. Bug them. Threaten them with leaving their company, and getting a bunch of friends to go with you. If they get nasty, or are not very cooperative with you, bring it here to FF. Open a thread, spread the word. Check with your state, and if legal, record your conversation with their supervisors, then post on youtube.

Don’t stop untill you get your voice heard. Write letters to the various associations responsible for regulating brokers. If you can, hire a lawyer or make your lawyer friend write a letter for you. Send the letter by registered mail. If everybody does a little, the brokers will start to get the message and then we will have a chance of seeing a change.

Of course you can find brokers that are not as bad as others, but generaly speaking they are all in the business of unfair competition with you , the client, who pay them with your spreads and “tip” them with your talent as a trader.

Their is still too much to say, but if I have to talk about all aspects of this subject we will go through too many posts before we get to the real objective of this thread - that is the “retail scammer’s” tactics.

Steelhead is really impatient to know how I was able to profile him, and I’m getting there folks…stay tuned

Last post we touched the subject of how brokers can scam you and what you can and can’t do about it. We are going pretty quickly over all points because our goal is to discuss “retail scammers” in greater detail. I believe that after we conclude this study you will be able to have a better idea of how they operate and be able to avoid a lot of problems in the future .

Retail Scammers

They come in the most varied colors and flavors!

Despite your level of intelligence, trading style, or account size you can be sure that somewhere out there, is a scammer especially tailored for you. This kind of creature (the scammer) is very similar to parasites that live off of peoples bodies. They can’t survive on their own so it is imperative that they find one or more "hosts so they can live off their accounts, despite what they seem to offer you at first. Their final goal is the inverse cashflow, which means money coming from you to them.

Scammers, just like traders, can be separated in various categories and levels like “IQ”, “organization”, persistence", skills, goals, etc etc…

At the same time you have some of them popping out of no where with a flamboyant and killer new strategy. You also can find others that prepare their sophisms for months, or even years, based on very Conservative and well established legitimate market approaches.

Some scammers are very naive and act so erratic that it’s almost laughable. They come up with such lame schemes thats it’s hard to believe somebody can fall for it. Other are so smart and organized that even the most vigilant traders are prone to fall into their traps.

The naive and disorganized ones are usually bankrupt traders like so many out there. They blew up several accounts , they are not very bright, and too undisciplined to succeed in this business

After all the pain they experienced through their multiple margin calls they decide to get their money back from the market by force. Since the brokers, banks, or the market itself is too big for them to fight, they go after you and me, and try and make the money they couldn’t make through legitimate trading.

The second class of scammers, the “bright” ones are usually composed by people who, during their whole life, were involved with some kind of scam or easy money making activity. They are the pros.

More specifically we can find , gamblers, unscrupulous salesmen, false insurance claimers, pimps, etc…etc. From my experience if we talk only about the forex world the gamblers and unscrupulous sales people are the most common. Having been in sales myself, I would like to say that I’m in no way talking about all those legitimate sales people who earn their living honestly every day. I’m referring here to the crooks who know what they are doing, and don’t mind, for example, selling that car that will break the next day for big bucks.

Ok …the gamblers. They came to forex for a world of excitement. Quick and easy money suits their style.

Sooner than later, though, they discover that the life of a successful forex trader is really boring and there are plenty of rules to be followed. And thats not even counting the fact that the “get rich quick” is not as quick as they envisioned. Knowing Las Vegas like the palm of their hand they know what an exciting life style looks like, so after a quick try they get that the forex market is just too plain boring for them. But hey…they’re hooked by leverage and the possible gains you can get with it. They actually like the kick and adrenaline rush of a big position opened as a scalp.

WOW!!! Man, made a killing in a few seconds !!!

Again it suits them well. Smart as they usually are, they realize that this form of gain is unsustainable on a regular basis, but again they are hooked . So guess what?? In order to sustain high levels of adrenaline in their bloodstream they go after your account. They figured out already that there’s a sucker born each minute, and going after those sheep is a lot easier and more exciting than exercising patience and discipline in the market

Whatever their background may be, the Scammer, for obvious reasons will not just come to you and tell you what he is up to.

Some of them pose as:

Beautiful women.
Handsome men (less frequent due to the fact that the vast majority of traders out there are hetero men)
Geeks
Mathematicians
Skilled, experienced and wealthy traders ( almost all of them, for obvious reason will claim this one to some degree)
Sent by god ( yes …I personally followed one with this kind of claim and the lack of capital G for their god is intentional)
Family guy
Friendly helper
Philanthropist ( very common also)

and the list goes on and on.

After the scammer decides which of those characters he will impersonate, the next step is to find some place where he can have the maximum exposure possible.

The environment we trade in today offers these people plenty of places to go, be heard and seen. Broker chats, forums, blogs, etc…etc are plenty, and since we are on the net where one can easily hide behind multiple email accounts and nick names, the scammer has plenty of resources. It is just too easy to come, for example, to FF and open various accounts during a period of time and create virtually a crowd of aliases so one will have some support in the chats and threads. When somebody starts to question his skills a bunch of zombie members will come to the rescue. Camouflaged in this virtual world, he or she can assume any form possible. Even sometimes creating arguments with himself just to come out winning the discussion and drawing more and more newbies into his scheme. Once he decides the place, or places where he will spin his web, and once his multiple accounts are set up, he is ready to move forward. He is under layers of disguise and has already set the stage with all smoke and mirrors he will possibly need. Now he is ready to gain peoples’ trust. He needs to make people believe in him in order to achieve his goal of inversing their cash flow. How does he do it?

Through a few steps

First he has to offer you something.

At least in the beginning, the perpetrator will always promise or even give you something. Be it some pips, a strategy, advice, or even some hope. He will, 100% of the time, come to you with something that is of interest to you. This looks like a simple and obvious concept but let me hammer it in because it is of such importance for both sides. Yours and the scammers. A lot of smart and otherwise very aware traders get caught in the scammer web right here.

What the scammer is trying at this point is to establish some connection with you. He will focus all his ability in trying to mesmerize you with what you want or need .

Maybe the first scammer you stumble into will not do it. Maybe not the second. But down the road you will surely find someone that will tell you something and you will say to yourself " hold on thats make sense!!"

Sometimes he will project an image in your mind, talking about his beautiful house, his life style, his vacation. Etc…etc . At first he or she may not even mention anything related to trading or the markets. His goal for now is to make you dream of the kind of life he “allegedly” has, and then the first link is established. You will end up craving for it.

Other times he will pose as a nice family guy showing pictures of his kids and wife and subliminally imprinting in your mind the idea that such a nice guy like that can’t be a crook.

Other times, using his or her natural charisma and sympathy he will conquer you as a friend…and people tend to do a lot of stuff for friends.

What about the geek posing as a smart a almost genius who, for some reason decided to teach you something proprietary and secret.

If you are a Christian like me you will be an easy prey for the guy that came with all the “God Blesses” he can say. Talking like a nice pastor he will convince you of all the plans of wealth and fortune that god has for you so you can help others, and make a difference in the world, yada yada yada (lower case g intentional).

What about the “supposedly” nice girl that will tap into all your fantasies of a smart, beautiful, and successful woman!! Why is she trying to help me? I must be special!!

It is essential that he project a winning image, not only to himself, but also to his system, strategy or indicator. Nobody will pay attention to something boring, difficult, complicated, or that will make just a few pips each time. So here the sales man shines. Even if the results he or she achieves are hard to replicate, it makes so much sense!! On top of that, they are so difficult to be proved wrong that a whole bunch of newbies, and even some more experienced traders, will fall for it or at least give it a shot.

Whatever system, strategy or indicator used, it is imperative that it not be too specific. Everything has to be a little vague and flexible because otherwise his trades will be spotted easily and he will get caught. You will never see a scammer lay down a precise set of rules for you to follow. They will never itemize a specific set of rules so you can specifically trade their strategy, system, or indicator.

Any decent trader out there knows the importance of following some simple but vital basic rules. Trade your plan, don’t add to losing positions, cut your losses short, discipline etc…etc
Those basic principles are oxygen in a trading environment. But in the perpetrators’ world all is flexible because the bottom line is that he can’t produce consistently winning trades. Hidden behind a set of flexible rules he can bend those rules and cover up, for as long as he can, the kind of trader he really is.

Once I was a part of a group that was taken in a scam plot. After winning us over in the FF forum, the guy brought us to a separate forum(more on this later) where he called his trades in real time. We were all there and just a few of us in the whole room realized what he was up to.

Basically the guy was putting his calls almost, in real time. When he was right, he was right. Some wrong trades he would admit to. But in the majority of his bad calls he would somehow, come out at 2 or 3 pips positive. Or he would break even. Or come out with a ridiculously small loss, while the rest of the room would fail and loose big pips.

When asked why he exited early in a spot where the system did not show any exit signal, he always had an explanation. And after the explanation would come advice to pay more attention to the system… yada yada yada. There was always a stop loss, a take profit, a hidden clue, to save him. And it was always explained after the fact. The calls were, again, almost in real time. But the reasons involved in his trading management always came after the fact. The result is that nobody apart from him, or his aliases could replicate his achievements, and at the end of the day we were the ones to blame because we were to stupid to follow the strategy.

Next time we will go through the next phases of the scam…stay tuned

Ok, last post we defined some of the most relevant kinds of scammers out there (at least in my opinion). We saw who they are and where they come from

We saw that they need a place of exposure.
They need to establish a link with you.
They often create aliases to help them in their forums.
They will promise, or even give you something in the beginning.

Retail scammers continued:

Ok. The scammer is on his way with his plans.

He caught the attention of a good number of traders, (pissing off a lot of more experienced traders in the process ). So now that he has a captive audience he is in position to move on to the next phase.

Being a father of 3 small kids I have to be very familiar with the strategies that kidnappers and child abductors use. In order to keep my kids safe I try to instruct my kids about their schemes so that, in the event of something like that happening to them, they know how to act. The most critical part in a child abduction or kidnapping is when the perpetrator takes the victim to a second place. Perpetrators are very restricted in what they can do as long as they are in the vicinity of the victims residence. So in order for the crime to be committed in the safest and most convenient way for the criminal, the victim Has to be taken to a second place.

Scammers act in the same manner. After they have gathered their captive audience from a place of maximum, exposure, it is in their best interest to conduct the “sheep” to a second place where he will have more control over them and where these “sheep” will be away from any kind of outside intervention. So it is imperative that slowly but surely people start to be conducted away from big and crowded chat rooms, forums, blogs etc to more private threads, or a less crowded room, or something along these lines.

The scammer knows that he can’t keep his scheme going forever. Big and crowded places are good to gather people but on the other hand there is also a lot of more experienced traders around. Even people that may have gone through the process of being scammed before, so his tactics are spotted by some people. His strategies questioned, and most of his intentions revealed. As soon as he can, he will bring you to a less crowded place. For obvious reasons, not all people that have their own threads or forums are scammers, but the scammer will always have his own thread or forum as soon as possible.

I have Oanda as my broker and by saying their name here I’m in no way endorsing them. Oanda has a chat room as do other brokers. When I started trading ( end of March of 2006) I started to frequent their chats religiously in order to learn all that I could from more experienced traders. There was a guy over there who was very eloquent and “knowledgeable” . He somehow got my attention. He use to trade euro/usd and always posted jpegs of his account, his transactions, some pretty darn good charts of options, expirations, and all the smoke and mirrors he could come up with. I have to say that this guy created a huge buzz on Oanda’s “pro” forum and created a bunch of friends and enemies. At the time i had no idea, but now looking back he went through the same steps we described here so far. Analyzing it now, he fit the profile perfectly. If I had to zero in on him to describe what character he impersonated, I would say that he was a gambler posing as a experienced, wealthy trader. I honestly don’t remember what nick name he originally had at the time (march 2006), but all the old and experienced traders ( the real ones) used to call him Brucie…so I guess his name was Bruce. All the experienced traders would call him out on his strategies, calls, charts, stops, etc… And the newbies, like me, would all jump in and defend him! At least he was helping us, unlike those experienced traders who only told us to go study at babypips! We, of course fully believed Brucie was a good guy, the real deal. Well, to make a long story short he got some accounts to manage from some naive people and those people never saw their money back. He messed up so much on the forum that he ended up being kicked out by oanda’s moderators. Apparently, when he ran out of “sheep” he came back 2 or 3 times under other nick names in the same forum. I do remember one of his aliases was “phoenix rising” which, through his characteristic posting style, was readily spotted by the senior traders. It is still all there in Oanda’s forum archives if somebody want more details on the story.

Well…surprise surprise…Bruce came here to FF under the new nick name, “Warren Forex”. He tried to start the same process of 'sheep gathering" and I guess he was able to get some accounts to manage here also. I feel good to know that I was one of the first to spot him here and advise people. Sadly, at the time I was trying to advise people against Bruce, another scheme was going on in the same thread, ( can you believe it?) and I was unable to detect it …but that’s another story.

I don’t want to go into details on the “Warren Forex” case but if you like details, just do a search here on FF and you will find plenty of things to read. Looks like people are still trying to get their money back from him, and I can’t stop thinking that Bruce, or whatever his name is, could be around again with a new nick name and a new scheme under way.

Now back on to the subject. The scammer brought you to a more reserved place, so he is ready to take you to the actual “second place” just like the child abductor does. Be it a chat room he opened in another place, or using most services available like Skype, MSN, Yahoo or even emails or whatever, the principle is always the same. He or she basically wants a place with no possible intervention from somebody else. In this new place nobody can cancel his subscription or question his strategies so he is very comfortable and relaxed. His “hard” work payed off and the perpetrator is salivating. He is very close to starting the cashflow inverse process and you are pretty much helpless. If you came this far, it means you at least have some kind of trust in his methods (unless you are there undercover to study him). At this point some of the less skilled scammers will start to get a little over confident, jump the gun, and start to make some silly mistakes. But if you got a real “pro”, he will still play this game with you for months.

Sure your results with him are erratic, but at least you have something to believe in, and lets not forget that he ( the scammer) is trading the same thing in almost real time and making a killer. Any discrepancies or paradox in the system are all due to your inability to understand the system. Trade it right and you will make the same profit as I do, is what He will tell you all the time. And so you stay on.

I’m here to guide you !!! …says the scammer

Next post we will go into details on the actual process of inversing your cash flow, and the most creative ways scammers use in this stage of the plot. He or she will not just come out of the blue and ask you for money.

His scheme is finally reaching it’s climax.

Stay tuned

Last post we saw that the scammer managed to gather all his “sheep” together in the second location. Thats a safe place…unfortunatelly safe for the scammer. Through Yahoo MSN , Skype, a personal blog or chat room the scammer got rid of moderatos, more experienced traders or ex-scam victims to kick him out or expose his schemes. At this point a skilled scammer will also not treat all his victims the same way. He knows that among them are the desperate, the curious, the frustrated etc…etc. so he will try, through his aliases, to define the best way to approach each one.

Lets try now to point out a few things the scammer will use in his approach.

sell you a piece of software
sell you signals
sell you one on one tutoring or mentoring
sell you one or a set of indicators ( black box like)
manage your account
borrow money
sign you for his payed private room
get your credit card number, SS number, bank account info etc
etc…etc…

Those are some of the most common practices. There are hundreds of others out there but the bottom line is the same for all of them, instead of money coming to you it is going from you (inverse cashflow).

Usually when the con see his schemes jeopardized due to some kind of unexpected exposure of his plot, or if he suspects that someone among the sheep is undercover and just waiting for the best moment to uncover him, he( the scammer) will act fast. His “hard” work is in danger so he needs to come up with something that will guaranty him something and get out.
In this kind of situation the scammer goes after your personal information like credit cards, SS number, bank account , paypal info etc…etc.

How??

Most of them will try to sell you something “cheap” and FAST. They know they are running out of time so they will try to contact all members with an unrefusable offer. They will offer you some of the products we described above for a very reasonable amount of money. It does not matter what he tells you because he has no intention to fulfill his promises. He is more interested in getting your payment information in the form of credit cards, bank accounts, etc so he can get a big chuck of money and get out. Leaving you to deal with the problem.

Credit cards are used fast because you can cancel it with a phone call, so the scammer will act fast buying what he can online, usually in stores like best buy where you buy on the internet and go pick up. Later they can sell it at pawn shops or on ebay. They can also print some checks with your bank account and put you in a big mess. Your SS number and DOB they save for later so when you least expect it, your credit report will show some credit cards accounts you never applied for.

Sometimes he will use one of his aliases to sell you, in order to make it more trustworthy. So instead of the scammer himself offering you his product, you will be aproached by a “class member”(aliases) telling you that the “guru” decided to offer him a deal and he thought you would be interested also.

Again, in situations like that the scam plot was probably busted and the guy just wanted to put his hands on some peace of personal information and get out…for the sake of your hard earned money!! Don’t let him do it!!!

If the scammer feels secure and theres no worry, he can go with his “sheep” for months, without trying to sell them anything. In this case, he will simply be careful to kick the scammed out of his room or service so the scammed can’t advise others.

He can take care of each ‘sheep’ individually. Of course, people will be struggling, and the results of their trading will be erratic. But the scammer is always trading successfully, making money, so people get more and more mesmerized with his skills. Since he is explaining things after the fact he always comes up with something that makes so much sense, and the cycle goes on .

Scammers play psychological games in order to make you blame yourself for your mistakes, not his system. By explaining past events he can point out where your lack of skills failed, while he (scammer) succeeded. With this strategy he can depress you so much that you will feel inadequate as a trader and will gladly hand your money over, so the scammer, as a “favor” will trade it for you, or sell you one of his many wares, as posted above.

Signals, and one on one tutoring can also go on for a while, based on the same psychological tactics. Lets not forget that he is dealing with newbies who have little or no clue into what trading is about. The scammer will tell them that it takes time etc…etc… Scammed or suspicious sheep will be weeded out as they appear and the inverse cashflow continues.

Other times they will manage to become your friend and after a well elaborated story will try to borrow money from you, or have you send him money so he can give to a philanthropic organization. The possibilities are endless.

Once I witnessed a perpetrator trying to get money from the friendly and the Christian with the story that he was in financial difficulty and needed some money to get back on his feet. Can you believe that?? Well the most unbelievable part is that a bunch of people helped him !!!

Next post I will name some names and try to give some examples of some famous scam plots. Nothing like some real life experience and some names that everyone is familiar with, to illustrate and exemplify how a pattern emerges and how a profile is built. Stay tunned.

Thanks for all these wonderful tips!

Well worth reading. I sort of come to think of a certain person here on Babypips who would probably fit the scammer profile.
His posts are long as hell with bold style capital letters frequently and very plentiful and he’s gone about getting himself a following and even from what I’ve read, managed to get investors and then proceded to lose or steal, who knows, pretty much all their money.
I will not name names, but it’s not exactly hard to figure out who I’m referring to.
I reserve the right to be wrong though, he may be honest and everything may simply have gone horribly wrong for him. I do not pretend to know or pass judgement, but I will say that he does fit the scammer profile as presented in your excellent posts.

Lesson would have to be then: never ever give out money or any other personal information.

A true philanthropist would have no need for it anyway, right?

what abt fap turbo

Hope it helps to open some newbies eyes out there:D

I managed to get kicked out of a very famous forum because of this posts. Hope the mods here are with the good guys !!!

Cheers !!!

Excellent and thought provoking series of posts

Great information, great post, I hope this thread works to expose those scammers to all of us. Thank you Pinchapip

Thamks Pinchapip, remarkable posts and a great eye opener, they are much appreciated.

This is an excellent thread, congrats.

Let me tell you what I learned or experienced so far. Scammers and Spammers in the Forex community are among the most sophisticated and at the same time aggresive I have seen in my life online. I have been involved in other business related to mainstream services and products and webmastering for 10 years, and I have never ever seen something like this.

Just to give you an idea, I have been reading some other Forex forums for long time, although I decided to jump in recently in this business. Just an example of the craziness we are in, I have seen group of people, working together to promote some brokers. They seem to be regular posters until they are discovered by a mod. Some are yet to be discovered. But some posters have developed a ultra sophisticated method of promoting a company. Like opening a thread, and maybe after months of posting and gaining some reputation, they start talking about how good “This or That broker” is. And smoothly giving “messages between lines” away. And no, this is not conspirancy, since I have seen some of those guys getting caught soon or late by the mods.

That is just one of the reasons of why I waited so long until I decided to jump in. You start to believe someone and putting your faith and trust in him, and finally it happened to be a guy trying to make you join this or that company, or trying to make you pay 1000 bucks to join this or that group to get content that is for free everywhere, or trying to sell you his miracle system. Made me think like “damn, if they really do that kind of promotion, and if all those guys just wanted to make me join that broker, is because they don’t do any money!!!”

So, everyone, take a lot of care in this business.

Be VERY VERY VERY careful.

And use Common Sense, although I know we cannot live persecuted, because there are a lot of good people out there too.

Greetings.

Ok guys it’s with a sense of accomplishment that I would like to report ( if you don’t already know) that another scammer " bites the dust". I’m not going to say where because of ethical reasons but in another very popular forex related forum a scam plot initiated by an individual under the handle of “ShakesFX” has just been busted.

My blood was shed over there and I, in the heat of the discussion, managed to be banned, but the ones that lasted went on with the good work, which ended up paying off.

ShakesFX was banned and while it does not means much since he can come back anytime under another handle, the buzz about the whole “scamm” issue is of immense importance. A lot of newbies got their eyes opened to the tactics scammers use and some “moderators” also got their eyes opened to the fact that some people are watching them and their lack of action.

Well…there’s a lot more to be done…lets keep on the good work!!!
