$* Statistical London Breakout Strategy *$

Hi drbios,

not quite sure, I did not have that, it might be fixed then. How about the others, anyone experiencing something similar?

Jonathan

Indeed, getting the settings right looks more a priority to me too. Would be great if you guys could attach a few setting files, because this morning I got some weird results (take profit 0.10 after my sl of 1 pip (!) got hit; also pending orders not executed because of wrong sl/tp settings), granted, this was with ā€˜London Breakout v1_4ā€™ (Crisscross):

(hope these pictures are ā€˜readableā€™, first time I post images here)

Anyway, also getting ā€˜PC Breakout Alpha 4ā€™ ready for trading is not as straight forward as it may look if youā€™re not very experienced in automated trading. In my humble opinion, having all features (inputs) arranged on the left side of the input window, with the ā€˜value fieldsā€™ next to them would make things a lot easier ( instead of a ā€˜comā€™ (comment) on the left side, another description line on the right and the actual ā€˜value fieldā€™ again somewhere else, which makes things more complicated than it already isā€¦ Maybe the reason for this is that most expert advisors have this layout (description on the left and right beside it, to the right, the input value field.

Hope Iā€™m not the only one having trouble setting these great eaā€™s up

Regards,

Ronald

Today may not be an accurate day to test/trade NY as today is Martin Luther King Jr Day.

Hi Ronald

I too am trying to figure out some settings. With the london open, i had 4 loses. All of them shorts. 2 had stop losses of 4 pips and 2 had stops loss of 12 & 13 pips. I am unsure of the 4 pip losses but the opening london candle was only 14.3 pips from high to low. And the strategy as Pipcompounder has been teaching us triggers the stop for a short (in this scenario) when the high of that candle is hit.

If I am wrong here guys/gals, please speak up.

UPDATEā€¦ sorry all, i looked at the wrong candle. 24.1 pips from high to low so no idea what the issue is yet.

Update:

Notice how these 4 orders were placed even before the first candle was over. Within the first hour of the open if I am understanding this chart correctly. I have it set to 09:00 with 1 for reference candle back. My order on Friday shows it was placed at 11:00 which is my brokerā€™s time for the 09:00 bar so that is odd. I am running version 4 today and friday was version 3. So for tomorrow, I have set the auto GMT to false to see if it makes a difference on the timing.

From what I see, the London opening candle was 25 pips long. Am I using the wrong candle?

@jsiebern.

You the man! Many thanks for explanation it perfectly makes sense now! Much appropriated!

Yes, you are right, i looked at the wrong bar.

did anyone backtested the EA? I mean, does the strategy works ? sorry if someone discussed this allready

Hi Riley,

setting this ea up is not an easy taskā€¦ Thatā€™s why I still would like for Jonathan to upload a few set-files, with a short description as to sl/tp/risk. The use of auto GMT eliminates the necessity of having to play around with different time zone settings, which should make it pretty easy to make up ā€˜default set-fileā€™ā€¦

Gonna keep fiddling around with the Alpha 4 version, while waiting for new updates/information/set-files (on a demo account, of course) and will keep in touch here.

UPDATE: for today (Dec. 22; 5:55 GMT here) Iā€™m also gonna try the Alpha_4 with ā€˜Manual GMT Offset = 2ā€™ (ā€˜Use Automatic GMT = falseā€™, of course - broker, ForexMeta, is GMT+2); Reference Candle Time = 09:00ā€™ (13:15 for the ny session); ā€˜Reference Candle Back = 1ā€™ and different Magic Numbers for all four charts (eurusd, gbpusd for both London and NY sessions). Also changed TP for London session to 1;300 (5 dig. broker, so 30 pips instead of the default 40) and Slippage to 50 (5 pips).

Regards

hmmmā€¦Iā€™m not sure whatā€™s happening, but the EA didnā€™t place any of the orders correctlyā€¦sorry I was out yesterday for MLK day.

I canā€™t find any candles that fit the prices these were entered atā€¦it almost seems to be maybe the open\close instead of high\low. This morning had an additional entry of pending orders after the TP was hit. Here is a backoffice log of my trades, the time is when the trades are actually opened. Thereā€™s too many trades taken on Monday, as well.

Here is the correct candle values and the outcome of how the trades should have went so far.

Mondayā€™s London candle high\low of 1.33277/1.33031ā€¦a double loss of about 24 pips each.
Mondayā€™s NY candle high\low of 1.33225/1.33120ā€¦a loss on the sell of about 10 pips and win on buy side of 40 pips.

Tuesdayā€™s (today) London candle high\low of 1.33634/1.33332 with an easy 30 pip win.
Tuesdayā€™s NY candle high\low of 1.33247/1.33092ā€¦sell should be now openā€¦

My broker shows no pending orders are open, so the EA hasnā€™t yet entered NY trades
I have GMT on and 9:00 and 13:15 times, with ref candle 1 back.

You are very welcome, happy to help!

A lot of manual backtesting has been done over the last year (and forward testing) for the strategy, it seems to work pretty good. Regarding the backtesting Iā€™ll just quote myself ;):

Seems you are on top of it ronald, thats exactly what you had to change.

@pipcompounder
Iā€™m also not quite sure whats happening at your end, the EA entered the trades fine for me this morning as well as yesterday. Is anyone else experiencing the same? I will look into this though!

Hi Pipscompounder

I made 2 setting changes. One was bad and one was good.

  1. I changed the retry settings to 0 in hopes that would take care of all of the multiple entries that happened yesterday. The resultā€¦ zero orders so I missed that great trade from the London open.
Since I saw this before the NY open, I have changed this to 1. It seems its not really a retry but a try.

  2. I switched my GMT setting back to false again.

The result is that I am short one single trade in the NY open with a single pending long as of this writing.

What manual offset are you using?
And youā€™re demoing with Finfx, right? So it should have same server time.

Hi Jonathan
Are you using the default settings in version 4 as your settings or have you made any specific changes for your personal account. Since yours has worked as planned, it might be a good idea for us all to compare settings and use yours as a current baseline.

for ā€œuse automatic GMTā€, i have not set to false and my offset is 2.
Yes, i am using Finfx, same as you.

My reference candle times are 09:00 for the London and 13:15 for NY

Also, you want to make sure that your magic number is different between your 2 charts.

Yes, magic number is differentā€¦

It seems my london trades this morning were off a candle 4 hours before the London open. My last trades had a buy close at a loss with an entry price of 1.3280, which is part of the downward spike, way below any candle closingsā€¦??? I think this may have been the NY trying to trade a 15 minute candel 4 hours earlier than it should haveā€¦???..maybe, just a guess.

The auto GMT is supposed to work off the .DLL, not the local time of my computer, right?

The GMT works off of your brokers chart time if you have it set to false and use the 2 hour offset.
Last week I missed a trade with version 3 because the night before I switched the chart to a different time frame for just a moment and then forgot to switch it back to H1.

For me its all default settings. Auto GMT true, Reentry 1, 09:00 and 13:15 respectively with 1 for look back.

It seems to me itā€™s the new reentry that screws things up for you guys (just wondering why it doesnā€™t for meā€¦)
I will download a demo of Finfx and try it there and look at the respective coding again!

Thanks Jonathan. Great idea. This way, at least this way, we are all on a level playing field.

  1. I changed the retry settings to 0 in hopes that would take care of all of the multiple entries that happened yesterday. The resultā€¦ zero orders so I missed that great trade from the London open.
Since I saw this before the NY open, I have changed this to 1. It seems its not really a retry but a try

If we want no re-entries at all, should we put minutes to 1 minute, and leave the setting at ā€œ1ā€?

Also, the problem with the hours may have to do with a broker having the candle time labeled as opening VS. closing time.
could that cause a problem?
