When the spread widen, is it bid price that goes lower or ask price that goes higher

The spreads are dependent on the market rates and this is why we cannot say which will go up or down as it depends on the demand and this is also a reason why we have to remain careful while dealing in highly volatile markets

What if for example the price falls during news and the spread gets bigger ? how does the spread get wider ? at first I thought the bid price goes lower but the ask stays until maximum spread.
