Good Literature for a beginner?

Hi all

I am a complete beginner and have thoroughly enjoyed the School of Pipsology and have begun trading on demo accounts… I am looking out for some literature to further my learning and was wondering if anyone has any recommendations??

Results so far have been abysmal and I would be very appreciative of any tips on good literature or websites that would help further my knowledge and hopefully with it my results…

Many thanx

There are several threads on this forum devoted to book recommendations.

Here is one — 301 Moved Permanently

Search the forum for the others.

Some titles keep coming up in recommendations, over and over again.

Here are several — in no particular order — that get repeated often:

Mark Douglas: Trading in the Zone, and The Disciplined Trader

Dr. Alexander Elder: Trading for a Living, Come Into My Trading Room, and Sell & Sell Short

Kathy Lien: Day Trading the Currency Market, and Day Trading & Swing Trading the Currency Market

Kathy Lien and Boris Schlossberg: Millionaire Traders

Jack Schwager: The New Market Wizards

Brett Steenbarger: Enhancing Trader Performance

Michael Covel: The Complete Turtle Trader

Curtis Faith: Way of the Turtle, and Inside the Mind of the Turtles

Van Tharp: Trade Your Way to Financial Freedom, and Super Trader

Max Gunther: The Zurich Axioms: Investment Secrets of the Swiss Bankers

John Murphy: Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets

Steve Nison: Japanese Candlestick Charting Techniques, and Beyond Candlesticks

Mark Galant and Brian Dolan: Currency Trading for Dummies

Barbara Rockefeller: Technical Analysis for Dummies

If you’re very new to forex trading, you’re probably wondering which one, or two, or three of these books you should start with. Ask any 5 traders, and you will get 5 different answers to that question.

My answer would be: Technical Analysis for Dummies, Japanese Candlestick Charting Techniques, and either one of the Mark Douglas books.

Forex education is essentially a do-it-yourself endeavor. And it should be a life-long pursuit. For the duration of your career as a trader, you should be reading and learning. So, take it a step at a time.

its a great website that focuses on price action trading

Just wondering if there were any suggestions as to any good Fundamental Analysis, or economic books that anyone would suggest for newbies.

Most forex traders are technical traders. But, there’s a Babypips forum for traders who want to keep an eye on fundamentals: Fundamental-ville: Learn & Discuss the Fundamentals of Forex Trading

I haven’t seen a book list over there. But if you inquire on that forum, maybe the veterans over there will start a list.

Thanks Clint, i’ll give it a go.

Look for a book on the net by a trader who calls himself Phantom of the pits, it has no copyright and is free to download. Personally its among the best I’ve read and i’ve read plenty.

I should mention it doesn’t discuss fundamentals or economics and is meant for traders with some experience but its one of the best books on trading.

Yeah, agreed keep the list going :}
Some of those I am interested in reading sometime.
I have Van K. Tharp’s Super Trader, looks real good.

Thank you all for your input guys…

I have downloaded the Phantom of the Pits book and am deeply engrossed in it, I especially like the definition of a good trader being one who is the best loser!!

Rome wasn’t built in a day afterall so I expect to take many a hammering on the road to becoming a good trader, and hope one day to become an utterly superb loser…

The October issue of Futures Magazine has an article on forex fundamentals that you might find to be useful. Here’s a link:

Also, here is an article in Investopedia by Boris Schlossberg and Kathy Lien that you should read:

Thanks Clint, i appreciate the links to the articles. I know most people around here don’t like the “F” word, Fundamentals that is, but i just have this itch about learning Fundamentals.

Indeed, I just started Forex myself a few months ago…I was into trading just plain ole stocks which had alot more fundamentals to them. but when i came to forex and read two books and started trading a little bit I noticed fundamentals are basically gone. lol.
Im 85% through the book “The Ultimate Day Trader” By Jacob Berstein…its a great book to read and is awesome if your a begginner like me

What were the other two?

thanks clint for the list … especially for
"John Murphy: Technical Analysis of the Financial Market"

can you guys suggest some more books on “pure technical analysis”

If you have completed the school here on Babypips, you already have a pretty good basic understanding of FOREX. I would recommend delving into the psychological aspect more deeply as it is most traders achilles heel. Alexander Elder’s’ 'Trading for a Living is an excellent place to start. When you’ve finished that Mark Douglas’s books are also very good.

Good luck!

A couple of days ago, I heard on the news that Walmart is taking on the big online book-sellers in a price war.
I decided to browse the Walmart site — Search results for investing - Walmart — looking for books on trading and economics.
Here’s what I found.

These books are listed in no particular order — just the order in which I found them on the website.

This is not a list of “recommended” books, although you will see some familiar titles here.

And I don’t know how these prices compare to Amazon or Barnes and Noble, the book-sellers Walmart is supposedly undercutting.

This list is simply FYI:

Yes, I also heard news to that effect recently.
Not only do they want to rival Amazon and the like, but also in all their other departments that they (Walmart) have.
I am surprised that they did not start their online department store presence earlier (it has been rather minimal in comparison), - they hope to be the largest online retail department store with the best prices.
