Forgive me for referencing charts from years ago! I’m am methodically and meticulously going through your treads, starting here, and learning your method of volume analysis.

Question
Why wouldn’t you have entered on a break of the little red box? (I think that is the “automatic rally”???)
If that is a viable entry would you suggest putting a stop 10ish pips below recent low?

Is it better to wait for the “no supply” (sorry if that “no supply” is wrong term - I still don’t fully grasp nomenclature, yet!), like we see on the last candle of this chart. ( I also see a confirmation of the bottom, thus double bottom, with “stopping volume” on the second to last candle.
If the last candle is in fact a confirmation of “no supply” I assume the close of the candle is a valid entry and the recent low would again serve as a place to put my stop, of course 10 pips below.

PS I have read past this post further into the tread and still had this question. Ultimately it looks like I would have got stopped out in both situations above.

I think you should explain a little more about tic activity and why on high volume candle sticks can be small (accumulation phase) with wicks compared to longer candles.

I can`t stress it enough to anybody who jumps onto the end of this thread. Go back and read the whole thing from the start, take your time, take notes and I have found it helpful to copy some of the chart examples into a trading bible and keep going over them. It can be frustrating trying to get your head around the concept but remember anything that is worth learning and mastering takes time.

Be patient.This is only the beginning.

Order flow refers to the order book that’s in the market which is made up of the orders that all the various players in the forex market have input. So you’ll have central banks, sovereigns, sovereign wealth funds, corporate treasuries, custody banks, clearers, prime brokers, real money, retail interest, model funds, BIS, etc. All of these will have orders placed in the market at various prices and these orders will be of variable sizes. These different entities will be entering and exiting the market depending on their own specific goals and timeframes. For example there could be a buy large order in Cable at month end when HSBC want to pay out their dividend. They’ll be looking to buy Cable at a good price and will have their orders loaded so that if price falls to that level they’ll fill part of their order. If price keeps hitting that level they’ll eventually get their order filled completely and if nobody else is interested much at that level and the buy order book is outweighed by the sell order book then price will drop down through that level until buyers are found again.

Stop hunting is where big players move price around to try and gather up the stops that might be hiding below certain points. This allows them to grab a quick few pips more and also allows them to see what sort of orders are in the book below the stops. If they see that the order book is strong around the stops area they’ll cover their original positions and book their profit. If the order book is weak under the stops they’ll keep pushing until they eventually come into a decent set of orders. When they hit the decent set of orders you’ll most likely see volume as the sell orders hit the high number of buy orders. Whoever has the bigger clout will win the day then.

Hey Pete! much appreciated thank you kindly, yeah a shame that some images were lost into the cyber blackhole of fileshare sites! ‘Good News’ is there are still a ‘high volume’ of ‘wide spread’ images ‘upthrust’ in the thread for ‘absorption’ by eager newbies looking to ‘test’ their ‘supply’ of volume. See what I did there?

The setups I have seen seem to be:

1. Likely continuation of the trend, pullback to 50 fib and bounce on higher volume
2. Continuation of the trend, no supply/demand indicating no interest in bucking the trend
3. Higher volume at previous resistance level which leads to a double top/bottom

I spent much time learning VSA but something never “clicked” with it and me. The best stuff I found was Wyckoff’s original literature which I think Pete based his stuff on if I remember rightly?

The fact that Forex shows tick volume rather than actual volume traded did also sit well with me, which is why I switched to the futures markets rather than Forex for this and did better there. Even so I reallized that there are setups based on price action which are much easier to follow and suit my style a lot better like the pipdaq setups hence why I left here in the first place!

Anyway I’m rambling on. I just wanted to say hello as I enjoyed hanging around these parts and wondered if it still lived!

Hope you guys adapt VSA to make it work for you!

OK, I will start with the basics.

I use the “volumes” indicator that comes with mt4. The bars that appear tell you the amount of ACTIVITY per candle (if you are using candles for price, which I mainly do). So, on a 1 min chart, each volume bar tells you the amount of activity that occured during the coresponding 1 min price candle.

So, we now know the amount of activity per 1 min candle, higher volume bar means more activity. The next thing to determine is IF it’s buying or selling activity. The most basic way to determine that is to ask “what did the price do”. If you see price moving up during that 1 min candle, we can say there is more “buying” activity.

BUT, buying AND selling activity will occur on a candle as well. How do we know which one has the increased volume?? to put it another way, the price candle may be green BUT, what if it has a big wick on top…indicating selling as well? [B]The answer lies in the candle close.[/B] A large wick on top, with increased volume shows us selling pressure. But needs to be taken in context with things such as s/r, and background buy and sell pressure.

Very high volume spikes can mean buying and selling in large amounts. That usually happens when for example, buyers made a final push up to resistance, where they found sellers entering, all during that one candle. So, that could cause a volume spike…lots of buyers AND sellers during that candle.
