I googled a bit trying to find a good broker (like Alpari, Oanda,…) which has VPS hosting and allowes installing custom software (own programmed and free software) on it besided MT4 platform. So far I found only RoboForex from the most decent brokers. What are your experiences with Roboforex, which brokers do you use for VPS and custom apps needs? Much thanks for your suggestions.
I use FXCM who provide VPS’s through FXColo and BeeksVPS. The VPS is provided free if you maintain an account over $5000.
Axi Trader also provide a free VPS but there’s a minimum monthly trading volume to qualify (it’s not much - two or three Lots I think). And I spoke to Alpari UK today and they also mentioned they could throw in a VPS if I opened an account, but I didn’t ask for details as I don’t need another one.
As far as I know, none of them disallow your own software as long as you’re not using their system for illegal purposes.
Thanks for your reply, but I don’t think this is true. I talked (online chat) with support of Alpari UK who now provide VPS, but they said it is not possible to install/run custom software, just the MT4 platform. Maybe that depends on their VPS provider. I haven’t talked to FXCM yet, they look a solid broker, but unfortunatelly their spreads are significantly wider than those from competition. I’ll contact some other brokers and ask about their VPS. Meanwhile, if you have some experiences with this, please share the info. Thanks again.
I wouldn’t want to trade on a VPS that is provided and administrated by the broker themselves. If they have an agreement with CNS or Beeks that’s fine, but the broker shouldn’t be in a position to mess with the server.
Thanks, I haven’t thougt about VPS from this perspective, I supposed they always play fair. Ok, there is always the option to hire a external VPS, but good hostings begins with cca 30$/mo. So I thougt why not taking brokers existing VPS if they offer it at no additional charge, except from that you must do some trade volume, but that is acceptable. What solutions do you guys use for VPS, what do you suggest?
I use CNS and Beeks. Both are aware of the needs of forex traders, e.g. they don’t have maintenance in the middle of the week. I’d say that CNS is more professional and longer in business, but Beeks is quite good as well. CNS as well as Beeks cooperate with several brokers so if you meet the requirements regarding deposit and/or trading volume you can get the VPS at a discount or even for free.
They are a bit more expensive, but at the end of the day, if I lose an account because the server was down for a few hours at the wrong time, it will cost me more.
It’s important when comparing spreads between brokers to keep in mind what execution model is being used and which brokers charge commissions on top of their spreads (noted with an asterisk in the table below). For example, FXCM offers clients the choice between two types of forex execution: No Dealing Desk (NDD) and Dealing Desk. While we believe that NDD execution provides the best all-around trading experience, we also offer dealing desk execution as an option for traders whose primary concern is low spreads.
Above is a snapshot I took from a table showing the live spreads from brokers regulated in the UK, and as you can see, our dealing desk spreads compare favorably with other brokers on the same execution model that also don’t charge commissions on top of their spreads.
While spreads are important, they are just one factor out of many to consider when choosing a broker along with 24 hour customer support, trading platforms offered, education, resources, etc. We seek to provide competitive spreads while also delivering great execution and a safe place for you to hold your funds.
It’s no secret that the brokerage industry has been in the midst of a price war for the past couple of years. That combined with lower trading volumes last year have caused many brokers to struggle. There was even a broker in Europe that went bankrupt after trying to entice clients with 0 pip spreads. Last year also saw the failure of a US broker that had previously touted their razor thin spreads. We’ve had other brokers have to pull out of the US after being unable to meet regulatory capital requirements.
If recent events have taught us anything, it’s that the financial stability of the broker you choose can have far greater implications than we previously thought. Unfortunately, the vast majority of these brokers are privately held companies, so it’s hard to know the state of their finances. Are they profitable, or are they barely staying afloat? How can you know whether they are safe place to keep your money?
FXCM is a publicly-traded company (NYSE ticker: FXCM), so information regarding our financial data is readily available. This is one of the reasons why traders have entrusted us with $1.171 billion in client funds as of the latest published data.
Thanks Jason. Even though your post looks more a commercial for Fxcm, you did provide more insight to broker businsess model and their financial stability. You do have some valid points on the subject, however if you “advertise” Fxcm, I would be more gratefull if you could address my question more in details. As the title says, I’m searching for a “good” VPS supporting broker. I saw that Fxcm offers it, but am I able to install custom software on the virtual machine I get? I need custom programmed and some open source software to use it in connection with MT4 platfrom, which helps me decide when to enter/exit trades. I don’t want to install any pirate software on VPS, just legall and my own software. So can I, or not? Besides, what are the HW characteristics of the VPS I get (Ram, Cpu, disk,BW)? Where is it located in terms with latency to your servers? How often are the down times? Am I able customize the VPS (startup app, root access, reboot,…)? What OS does it have(Win server 2003,…)? Thanks again.

Jason, can you please provide link to the table of spreads in your post. If I check Spreads | Myfxbook the picture is completely different and Fxcm spreads are pretty high.
The two VPS hosting services mentioned on our website are FXColo and BeeksFX. Both services will allow you to download custom software on your virtual machine.
Both FXColo and BeeksFX offer different tiers of service. The packages listed on the FXCM site are available for $30 per month, but are free if your account balance is at least $5000. The specs for these packages are below.

I’m not sure if I’m allowed to link to another forum, but the spread table in my previous post was from Forex Factory. I’m not sure what time of day you checked our spreads on Myfxbook, but I looked just now and the info was comparable.
Nice threads and post here, but this should be in the broker’s section if am not mistaking. In this way people can benefit more as the go there for info on brokers.
You can set up a free vps with zulutrade if you provide trade for you to follow . I set up a demo account and do all my back testing on it . Don’t care if it look crap or great . I only use it for testing
Also my broker offer free vps if you have account of $5,000 this is pretty normsl for must broker
Just be carful . You really wAnt to use a third party vps . One that is close to the broker or one close to you .
The broker that give free vps have just set up their own PC/sever for you to use . Ie if there not using 100% of their computer power why not sell it off .
Hell if you give me $50 you can use my PC as a vps . Just use team viewer LOL
perfect that you using the VPN services, but don’t you think we should show some decent performance as a SP, regardless?
Don’t think on so low level btw… be a bit large
Thank you all for the info. Besides, I must post a correction, I found out that Alpari UK does offer a free VPS as long as you do 10 lot transaction/mo and their VPS provider does allow to install/use custom software if it meets their requirements (legal, not malicius,…)
