Does anybody trade the news anymore?

I noticed on a lot of blogs that there isn’t much information out there any more on trading the news. I thought I would start a thread for people who do trade news and for others who have thought about it and don’t know where to start or didn’t know of the opportunity.

I have personally been trading the news for over 2 years and the market has changed a lot from when I first started. Brokers are now smarter and fully aware of all the auto-click softwares out there to get you in before the spike. But as markets change and brokers adapt, you have to as well as a trader. Sure, you can make a good deal of money at one broker by a simple one click trade technique and this can be even more affective if you spread your money out among several different brokers while you do this. But you also need the fastest of softwares for multiple clicks to beat your broker to the punch.

Second, people need to understand where brokers get their liquidity. If you only deal with retail bucketshops, they have a dealing desk who have the right to hold your trade and offer you a “requote.” On their own behalf, they are providing you with liquidity.

Third, do not rule out ECNs. ECNs are great places to trade the news if you have the proper setup. The key here is to protect yourself against bad fills during fast markets. There are several good ECNs out there which provide good liquidity and fairly tight spreads. I recommend checking out all out and trading with the one you feel most comfortable with. Also, at ECNs, your trade is anonymous so there is no such thing as your broker “shutting you out” during news time as they don’t even follow how each account is traded.

Lastly, the futures market is another great place to trade the news. If you notice, the Dow, S&P, treasuries, gold, oil, and natural gas among others, all create giant spikes during news time that can sometimes be even more profitable than the forex news spikes. You will never have an issue with a futures broker trading the news as they only act as clearing agents amongst a zero sum game where buyers and sellers are always matched up.

I look forward to hearing from other people’s experiences trading the news and will keep a thread up to date of the latest news strategies and how I’ll be looking to take down a few pips in this volatile market

If you have any comments or suggestions you think may help other traders, please post.

Happy Trading,
