Hello from the Jersey Shore (it's nothing like the show)

Hello my name is Pat from NJ in the US. I am a millenial college graduate with a degree in Psychology, don’t choose that as a major if you actually want to make money. I am at the crossroads in my life trying to find a career and the general direction of my life. I am pretty broke right now and making lots of money is never a bad thing so one day, I came across forex trading. Currently I’m quite the newbie with nothing under my belt except a lot of reading on the subject. I am a very fast learner, cerebral, disciplined, good with numbers, and rather wise for my age so I truly think I can nail this forex trading with enough hard work. At this point, I want to open a demo account and gauge my performance. I am so glad that I found this website since it’s so user-friendly and supportive of the little guy like me. I started the school here on baby pips and am going through it as fast as I can. I look forward to learning from everyone and helping wherever I can. Good luck to all and happy pipping!

Hey Pat.
Mike here, from next door, PA.
I first want to welcome you to this awesome site. This is the gateway to the forex world. There are so many helpful people around here to lend you a hand and put out some very rich advise, and you will also be walking around here with some very experienced traders.
But as I viewed your post, there was a few things that just jumped out to me.
First off, I’ve been around for 2 1/2 yrs. This is my passion. And it’s the one thing in my life that I wish I would have discovered 20 yrs ago, like in your situation now. Wow. If I could be in your shoes, my life would’ve turned out so differently. It’s a long road, but with all the trips and falls that come with it, in the end it’s worth it. You have to have a love for it to keep you in the game. If you don’t and money is what’s driving you then you just won’t last. As I see you have mentioned about not having a whole lot of money, but, you have to see this field more than just getting rich. Sure there’s opportunity to make money, but it’s difficult. So much that you will have to have a love for economics, or love strategizing stuff, maybe statistics grabs you, love solving puzzles, all to keep you in the game …even have a real insight into psychology! And I mean having self control over yourself.
And that is what jumped out at me about you the most. Being a psychology Major. See, after a couple yrs in it, I recently have realized the importance psychology plays in this game. Sure, I’ve always known that’s an important aspect, but never took that literally. And I mean really. There is a traders mindset that has to be had. I cannot stress to you enough how important that aspect is, in this game.
Look, your gonna have so much going through your head in the beginning…how the market works, what’s the best strategy, which indicators are best, etc… And you’ll feel so many emotions along the way that will somehow affect your decisions. So, your gonna have a full plate. But I can promise you that at sometime on this road you will be faced with the ‘psychology’ aspect. Sometime maybe you can pick up the book ‘Trading in the Zone’ by Mark Douglas. He will help you understand what the correct mindset should be. That is, to become a consistently successful trader.
So, I just wanted to reach out to you and let you know that I’m here for ya if you need.
I do have a thread started in the newbie section called ‘trading in the zone’. It’s all psychology.

Mike

Mike,

Thank you so much for your guidance. I am very grateful for any advice you give me. Yes the psychology piece is very relevant. Psychology is the scientific study of thoughts and behaviors and surely in forex, every trader has thoughts about the market and trading behaviors in the market. I’ll definitely check out that thread and book and maybe I can even contribute. As for my passion, they are flexible right now and I do believe that I’m developing a passion for this. I am very interested in any kind of knowledge and I have a minimal background in economics. As for the money thing, I know that money will make the everyday struggle much easier but trust me, I know it won’t solve all of my problems. I’m just very hungry.

Thank you,

Pat
