How much internet speed do i need?

Hi all,
Is 10Mbps enough for my forex trading? or do I need faster internet speed like 100Mbps?

That should be more than enough internet speed to have updated price quotes and instruct your Metatrader system to make trades.

The speed you need depends on your trading style.

10Mbps is more than enough. The amount of data exchanged is even with charting data and executing trades is so minimal. Probably not even as much as streaming a video off of YouTube.

I have DSL through the phone line and that’s more than enough

WOW lol

Except some of the extreme scalping styles, that speed is enough.

That should be plenty.

More importantly is it’s reliability, and a cable connection is generally advised over wi-fi.

depends on your broker
some nasty brokers will
disconnect you during
market volatility so
can’t execute any orders.

Even 10k will do the trick if you do not use the connection for other things like browsing. You just need a reliable connection with a good backbone. That’s important, not bandwidth limit!

If you have a 1k ip frame it travels the same speed no matter what bandwidth you have as long as it is big enough to let it through without splitting it in smaller packets.

I would expect the internet speed required for trading is far less than that required for a streaming youtube video, even though streaming video is highly compressed, video is highly data intensive and needs several hundred kilobits per second. Forex price quotes are probably just a few bytes each, I would imagine the internet speed required would not be much higher than dialup

Chart feeds are rarely that fast. Most are smoothed to reduce bandwidth at the backend. If you’re talking bleeding edge-scalping, you’ll need a broker that caters it, more than anything else.

I don’t scalp, well ok, I scalp the daily time frame… sounds like a contradiction doesn’t it. Only problem I have with DSL is dropped connections which happen way too often. Danm Windstream.

I’m a (n00b) scalper and I have to say, I’ve been very pleasantly surprised by the minimum requirements for the internet connection. Before I started, I assumed I wouldn’t have enough.

I have an ancient computer but I run only Linux, so it’s super reliable. The internet connection is only 768Kbps (cable). I also have a UPS so power blinks won’t blow up my account (LOL).

Anyway, I haven’t really had any major issues with lag, etc. One day I do want to boost the speed but right now I’m being cheap.
