I just learned how to make a template , so that I can simply set up my chart in any time by just one click.
So after the chart is set up I save my template at Olim metatrader . But I using few difference broker platform , so I try to copy the template file from Olim , then I realised I cant find the TPL file. 1st I try to search by computer then it just came out a Template file shortcut, then I try to right click and click for file location it show me C:\Program Files (x86)\OLIM MetaTrader emplates , then go inside still cant see any of my saved template file .
Is there anyone know how to find out the saved template so I can copy and paste to my FXCM Metatrader.
Or I using the wrong way to save/create the template ?
Metatrader has some way to hide the template files when you save it to the default directory. You can’t even find the files with a power-search application like everything.exe
How I got around this is I create a folder called “Forex” inside my main “My Documents” folder. I then created a “Templates” folder inside of this new “Forex” folder.
Once I got the chart looking the way I wanted it to, I would right-click on the chart and click “Save Template” but I would put it in this new folder I had just made. It will show up there. You can now copy this new template file into the templates folder of any MT4 install you setup regardless of broker.
Try C:\Users\your_username\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\MetaTrader 4 emplates
That’s where mine are physically stored.
Make sure you show all system files folders in the option menu in windows explorer otherwise you probably won’t see the appdata folder.
hmmm, weird … I can see all my templates in the ‘templates’ subfolder of the main MT4 folder.
If you have various MT4 instances, are you sure you’ve checked the right one?

It’s more than likely got to do with File Virtualisation that’s embedded into windows 7 (maybe vista) - I am only assuming he is running Vista and higher because of the x86 on the end of his program files path.
Have you tried searching for the template name? That way you can find out what folder it’s in. On Windows 7, you can click on the Start button, then type in the template name where it says “Search programs and files”.
I’m on Win7 Ultimate, so that can’t be it.
Could you explain ‘File Virtualisation’, please? I have never heard that term and have no idea what it is or does.
But the ‘x86’ just indicates whether it’s a 32-bit or 64-bit Windows version (x86=32-bit, x64 = 64-bit).

Thanks everyone here is the picture the problem I facing ,After catch the picture I only realise theare is a lock signal at the TPL file I saved dont know what reason. Anyway the problem have been solve by save at dekstop instead of save at Template file location.
FXRenegade : Thanks, I save the file at dekstop then the file already can be saw it.
hehe, you better upgrade that Vista to Win7 … Vista is the crappiest OS Microsoft has ever released (and that means a lot, lol).

Hey PaladinFX, yeah I am aware of what the x86 stands for But I don’t recall Windows XP (64 bit version) seperating its programs like vista and 7 do. The best way to explain file virtualisation is thinking of it as seperate profiles for each program installed on the machine. You have one clean install of metatrader on the machine that any user can access. You configure the toolbars, windows and save a few templates. User B logs in and wants an entirely different setup - without fv user b has now overwritten your custom configuration of metatrader. With file virtualisation windows basically redirects these changes(registry, saves, save locations etc. etc…) to the users profile directory. Hopefully this kinda of explains it, you could always pull an msdn article up on it.
There is a quick way how you can open Application data folder with MT4 information in windows Vista/7, just press Win+R keys and then enter this into “Open” field: %APPDATA%\MetaQuotes\
Yeah, I know that you know what it means … this remark was more for the benefit of those who don’t.
Ok, I understand ‘Virtualisation’ now, thanks for the definition.
If I got it right, every user of a PC (Admin, User1, User 2, Guest etc) gets assigned a path to an application, so that they won’t overwrite each other’s settings all the time. Like separate doors leading into the same room; and Admin can access them all, like in a basic network setup.
I have to admit though that I don’t see how this can cause a user to ‘lose’ his own files … after all they were created and saved under his own username and should hence be available.
But, lol, never mind … after all, it’s Vista, which can mess up in new and undiscovered ways any time, hehe.
And Booo found a way to overcome the problem … so, everything’s fine.
Cheers,
P.
Agree, overcoming problems is good. He doesn’t really lose his own files as metatrader can find them at all times, finding them on your drive is another story. Hence virtual link I guess, the program just treats it as a normal file then windows finds the actual location when the file is opened.
There is one more way how to avoid virtualization in Windows. You can simply install MetaTrader outside of Program Files folder (for example C:\MT\Your terminal name) and its files will not be virtualized.
I see … so that is why I have never encountered this problem.
I use drive C:\ solely for the OS and those applications that do not offer a choice of where to install them.
All other software I install on a second partition, D:.
That way, if there ever is a serious problem with Windows, I can just format C:\ and reinstall it, without having to worry about all my applications and data.
It’s nice to also have PC experts on the forum, hehe, since ‘normal’ users like me don’t know stuff like that.
