They have been oft-recommended on here, but I would strongly recommend the two Market Wizards books by Jack Schwager - Market Wizards and New Market Wizards. I read them both when starting out, and am actually rereading New Market Wizards right now. They consist simply of interviews with successful traders. If you need persuading that trading can really work, and that being surrounded by people who think you are crazy to try is not necessarily a problem, then read these books would be my advice.

I’ll second the Market Wizards books. I’ve been thinking about giving them a re-read myself of late.
