Insider and several other news organizations have identified 78 members of Congress whoāve recently failed to properly report their financial trades as mandated by the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge Act of 2012, also known as the STOCK Act.
Congress passed the law a decade ago to combat insider trading and conflicts of interest among their own members and force lawmakers to be more transparent about their personal financial dealings. A key provision of the law mandates that lawmakers publicly ā and quickly ā disclose any stock trade made by themselves, a spouse, or a dependent child.
But many members of Congress have not fully complied with the law. They offer excuses including ignorance of the law, clerical errors, and mistakes by an accountant. Insider has chronicled this widespread nature of this phenomenon in āConflicted Congress,ā an ongoing reporting project initially published in December 2021.
While lawmakers who violate the STOCK Act face a fine, the penalty is usually small ā $200 is the standard amount ā or waived by House or Senate ethics officials. Ethics watchdogs and even some members of Congress have called for stricter penalties or even a ban on federal lawmakers from trading individual stocks.

I donāt need to convince anyone that Biden is not old. Heās old as dirt. Heās too old in my opinion to be president, at least given the other several hundred million Americans that could stand in his place.
I recall certain fans of Trump calling out Biden at the last election for his age, yet I hear nothing of Trumpās age this go around. Trumpās the same age as Biden was at the last election. Hypocrisy much?
Iām smart enough to understand that the president doesnāt run the day-to-day of the country. Iām also smart enough to understand that Trump didnāt run the show all on his own the last go around. Thatās probably why most in this cabinet were either indicted, quit, were replaced or wouldnāt endorse him for another term. Thatās not a good look for Make America Great Again.
If you all are worried about policy, Iām not sure how you can keep a straight face and think Trump and Co would do a better job at policy building.
So while I worry about Bidenās health moving forward into a new term, I wouldnāt be so much worried about the rest of the team that do the actual work. Canāt say the same for Trumpās team. Hell, he took over 12 months to fill even half of the vacancies in the govāt. But Iām sure his fans call that draining the swamp. Or āefficiencyā.
