Trumpās veep shortlist had been stocked with shameless sycophants who pledged themselves not just to an extreme MAGA agenda, but to the former president personally. Vanceāthe preferred pick of Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr.āwas regarded as the least likely to expand Trumpās existing base. That may not have seemed like much of an issue a week ago, when Trump appeared on track to rout a senescent Joe Biden in a 2020 rematch. But then Biden dropped out, Vice President Kamala Harris quickly began closing the polling gap with Trump, and what was previously shaping up to be a Trump cakewalk has become a competitive hundred-day sprint to Election Day.
Where another Republicanāsay, Marco Rubio , Tim Scott , or even Nikki Haley āmay have been an asset on the trail, Vance has so far seemed a drag on Trumpās ticket. He is, as CNNās Harry Enten noted, the least popular vice presidential nominee in decades, according to polls, which also find his favorability ratings low with undecided voters and even those in his own home region. His recently-resurfaced remarks about what he calls the āchildless cat ladiesā in the Democratic Partyāincluding Harris, who has step-childrenāhave been roundly criticized for their extraordinary cruelty. And then there is what we might describe as his anti-charisma, as displayed by his flat jokes about Diet Mountain Dew and a recent ābehind-the-scenesā peek at a campaign event he gave supporters in a fundraising video.

JD Vance has had a difficult week, and some Republicans arenāt hiding their frustration.
Despite momentum after former President Donald Trump named him as his running mate, the Ohio senator started receiving unwanted attention after old clips resurfaced of him calling some Democrats āchildless cat ladiesā and suggesting parents should have more political power than non-parents.
Vanceās change of fortune also collided with the rise of Vice President Kamala Harris, who has broken fundraising records and is on a glide path to receiving the Democratic nomination after President Joe Biden bowed out of the race. And Harris ā who would be the first Black and South Asian woman president and is running a campaign with the unofficial slogan āweāre not going backā ā has made the contrast with the Trump-Vance ticket even more stark.
Itās all starting to get some Republicans worried ā and frustrated. Some, like Arizona Republican operative Chuck Coughlin, conceded that Vance has had a ātough week.ā
āNothing like a baptism by fire,ā Coughlin said.
Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro bluntly questioned whether Trump should have picked Vance, saying on his show: āIf you had a time machine, if you go back two weeks, would [Trump] have picked JD Vance again? I doubt it.ā
Other Republicans also wondered aloud if the Trump campaign had truly anticipated the tidal wave of resurfaced comments, book writings and remarks that would come with picking a 39-year-old, recently elected senator who had grown up online and was firmly seated on the right of the Republican Party.
āOf the people that were mentioned as finalists, he had the most risk, because he had never been vetted nationally,ā said Bill McCoshen, a Republican strategist in Wisconsin. āDoug Burgum ran for president, he had been vetted, mostly. Marco Rubio has run for president, he had been vetted. JD Vance hadnāt. So there was risk in the pick. And weāre going to see over the next 102 days how he stands up to the bright lights of a national campaign.ā
One House Republican lawmaker suggested those vetting concerns werenāt just coming from the pundit class.
āFind me one publicly elected official in the Senate who is pushing JD Vance other than Mike Lee,ā said the Republican lawmaker, who was granted anonymity to discuss the sensitive matter. āIāll wait."
Since Harris began her presidential campaign, Democrats have begun to go on offense against Vance, and polls suggest these attacks are beginning to take a hit. Vance averages a net favorability rating of negative 5 percent across all polls, lower than any vice presidential nominee in history, CNN analyst Harry Enten said this week ā a lower figure than former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, perhaps the most infamous GOP running mate pick.
Vanceās favorability was underwater by 3 percentage points in two polls of a Harris-Trump race released this week by the New York Times/Siena College and NPR/PBS News/Marist College ā the latter of which found that 28 percent of registered voters hold a favorable view of Vance, while 31 percent viewed him unfavorably. Forty-one percent were unsure or have not heard of him, the Marist poll found.
The lawmaker accused Donald Trump Jr. of pushing Vance as a means of securing a legacy for the former president. Instead, Republicans have mounting worries after a week of resurfaced clips of Vance calling Harris and other Democrats āchildless cat ladiesā and suggesting parents should have more political power than non-parents.

WASHINGTON (AP) ā Republican leaders are warning party members against using overtly racist and sexist attacks against Vice President Kamala Harris, as they and former President Donald Trumpās campaign scramble to adjust to the reality of a new Democratic rival less than four months before Election Day.
At a closed-door meeting of House Republicans on Tuesday, National Republican Congressional Committee chairman Richard Hudson, R-N.C., urged lawmakers to stick to criticizing Harris for her role in Biden-Harris administration policies.
āThis election will be about policies and not personalities,ā House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters after the meeting.
āThis is not personal with regard to Kamala Harris,ā he added, "and her ethnicity or her gender have nothing to do with this whatsoever.ā
The warnings point to the new risks for Republicans in running against a Democrat who would become the first woman, first Black woman and first person of South Asian descent to win the White House. Trump, in particular, has a history of racist and misogynistic attacks that could turn off key groups of swing voters, including suburban women, as well as voters of color and younger people Trumpās campaign has been courting.
The admonitions came after some members and Trump allies began to cast Harris, a former district attorney, attorney general and senator, as a āDEIā hire ā a reference to diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.
