Running Parallels

I have just installed Parallels on my 27’ iMac so I can run TradeStation…

However I cannot find a way of running the VM Windows 7 at the iMac’s native resolution of 2560 by 1440? There must be some traders out there who use Mac’s?

The resolution setting in a virtual environment would be linked to the virtual video driver. Make sure you have the guest additions driver (or whatever it is called in Parallels) setup correctly in the virtual Windows. If your resolution 2560x1440 (dang that’s hugely nice) is not available, you may have no other option. Check also these other 2 popular virtual emulators that work with Mac. You can probably determine from their specs what the max supported resolution is:

Oracle Virtualbox
VMware Fusion

Thanks for the reply!

I have tried changing the driver to increase the resolution however it seems that the windows emulated graphics card can not be allocated any more resources to handle the higher resolution?

I will try the other two options that you have suggested at the weekend.

Since Tradestation does not support the Mac yet I am trying to find an alternative way of using the large screen. I did try using the remote desktop connection from my laptop but the resolution was also restricted by what the laptop supported. :frowning:

I am now considering building a server in the attic that will run my trading platform and I will connect to that using remote desktop.

Here is something I came across that may help. I do not use Parallels myself so I’m a bit in the dark.

According to this, you need to allocate an appropriate amount of video memory to the virtual video card. The error message you are describing seems to indicate that, within virtual Windows, it does not have enough.

Thanks, I have tried that without any luck I have allocated the maximum of 256mb but Still can not increase it further.

Apologies for this post getting a bit techie from the Forex talk… Just to get back onto topic I can’t wait to see all those high resolution charts on the big screen.

I cannot seem to find anyone referencing Parallels and using the full native resolution. But I did find this which describes someone getting the full resolution with VirtualBox which is free and equal quality to Parallels in my opinion.

I also run Parallels with Windows 7 on two different Macs (a 17" MacBook Pro and a 27" iMac) and do not have any trouble with the resolution. Have you installed Parallels Tools yet?

Yes I have installed the tools. It is running in full screen but as it is not the correct resolution the picture seems a little elongated. I will try installing the VirtualBox at the weekend and see if that is an improvement.

unbeleiviable…

I started parallels this morning and after windows carried out one of its random updates I had the option to change the resolution.

Thanks for all you help!
