Hello,
While I’m extremely happy that you like MT4’s Strategy Tester (and it’s also great to see you posting to inform and help others) please heed these words of warning:
DO NOT rely completely on the results that the Strategy Tester gives you when testing a system. After MONTHS of testing and MORE testing: myself and two dear friends of mine proved that the results that the Strategy Tester gives you are unreliable and inconsistent. MUCH depends on the ‘Modelling Quality’ and your data. We conducted numerous tests and found that (sometimes) while using the SAME broker, (apparantely) the SAME data, and the SAME EA: all three of us got different results!!! As a matter of fact there were a few occasions where running the SAME EA multiple times without changing ANYTHING (without even exiting the Strategy Tester and simply repeating the test over and over): the results differed from test to test.
In addition: attempting to optimise a trading system using ANY type of automation is very dangerous and there are may pitfalls. I’m not going to go into detail here as there are VOLUMES of books that have been written on the subject but suffice to say that it’s not QUITE as easy as developing a trading system, testing it (with optimisation) in the Strategy Tester, and then using the ‘ideal’ parameters (as indicated by the Strategy Tester) to trade.
Enjoy (but be careful).
Regards,
Dale.
the strategy tester is useful only to train your eyes to see the PA or how a indicator reacts to the market changes.
is not good to practice trading but is very good to learn some basics in not much time.
Hello,
I see your point and it’s not a bad idea at all. I guess the issues that I posted about are really more directed at those who test their trading systems in the Strategy Tester, optimise them, and then believe that using the supposed ‘optimal’ parameters: their EA will perform as indicated by the Strategy Tester. This is not necessarily the case and that was the point that I was trying to make is all.
Regards,
Dale.
like my bank manager always saids: “past profits do not garantee future profits”
LOL!!! He’s quite right!!! LOL!!!
That said though: the backtesting and / or the optimisation of a trading system is a SCIENCE which some people may not realise. Me: I’d rather ‘paper trade’!!! (But I know this is not what your thread is about of course).
Regards,
Dale.
