by Jim Racalto, writer/editor:

HIGHWAY ROBBERY: LARA/WILLIAMS:

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – In my years of watching boxing, this may have been the first decision I have actually seen that was clearly stealing a fight from a man that he clearly won.

Paul “The Punisher” Williams, who ran through the professional ranks before being stopped cold by Sergio Martinez in the second round last November, took on the young, up-and-coming and previously unbeaten Erislandy Lara on Saturday, July 11th, 2011, and by all accounts, including the ringside analysts and Harold Lederman, believed Lara won by a landslide. Apparently they were wrong.

After watching the replay of the fight, I scored it as follows:

Round 1: Lara Round 2: Lara Round 3: Williams Round 4: Williams Round 5: Williams Round 6: Lara Round 7: Lara Round 8: Lara Round 9: Lara Round 10: Lara Round 11: Lara Round 12: Williams

Total Rounds: Lara 8 Williams 4

Punch Stats:

Lara: Landed: 224 Thrown: 530 Percent 42

Williams: Landed 200 Thrown 1,047 Percent: 19

Lara landed roughly 50% of his power punches to Williams’ 22%. At the end of the 10th round Williams’ corner themselves said he needed a knockout to win. The look on Lara’s face when the decision was announced told the story after this asinine tragedy, and speaks to exactly what is wrong with boxing today.

All three judges were not only inexperienced, but incompetent, one had not judged any notable fights nor title fights. Why these guys are professional judges is beyond me, they clearly know zero about the sport of boxing, and robbed an on the rise star of a clear-cut victory. This wasn’t one of those Alexander/Matthyse decisions where it was close throughout and could have gone either way. This was a definite win for Erislandy Lara, and that is coming from a true boxing fan.

It makes me wonder where I can apply to become a judge, so travisties like this this one can be avoided in the future. Lara landed his overhead left at will, and Williams continued not to use his 6-2 frame to his advantage and fought inside, which was a big mistake as Lara had his way for clearly 8 rounds. Even the rounds Williams won are subject to opinion.

To recap, Harold Lederman scored it 9-3 for rounds in favor of Lara. All three HBO analysts including Max Kellerman said it was a run away win for Lara. Lara dominated every punch stat, especially in the power punch category.

During the post-fight interview, Lara immediately clamored for a rematch and seemed clearly disappointed and dejected, and with good reason. I cannot imagine how the man must have felt, fighting his heart out as an “underdog”, putting on a career performance in a preconceived sure-win, and then having the chair pulled out from under him in one of the biggest outrages in recent boxing history.

I am appalled, and almost furious at this decision. It was the worst scored fight I have ever witnessed, I can not bring myself to even comprehend what the three bowling pins who call themselves judges saw to even give Williams more than four rounds, let alone a victory, although one had it a draw. Still utterly ridiculous in every sense of the word. The three judges should probably never, and I mean never, call a professional fight again, let alone a fight of Williams/Lara magnitude. How they even got in the positions they are in baffles me, as it is obvious they have limited knowledge of the sport.

Boxing is already out of the American mainstream, and if casual fans as well as regulars witnessed this fight, it probably did not help the cause to get boxing back into the limelight. The boxing commission better get it’s crap together so the man who wins the fight always has his hand raised at the end, and do away with the circus that comes with letting idiots judge fights. I have heard the three judges were recently banned by the state of New Jersey, which makes me smile. Now if the rest of boxing can get their heads out of their asses we’d be all set.

Williams-Lara ‘decision’ investigation intensifies

One week later the “great ring robbery” in Atlantic City, New Jersey continues to smell.

Informed sources have told this writer that the investigation into the Paul Williams-Erislandy Lara fight is hardly over. After reviewing a tape of the bout, the sitting board members of the New Jersey State boxing Commission, ordered Commissioner Aaron M. Davis to suspend judges Al Bennett, Hilton Whitaker and Don Givens indefinitely. Davis also stated on Wednesday that he was, “unsatisfied with the scoring of the contest”.

Lara, who many figured was a tune-up for a potential Williams rematch with Sergio Martinez, entered the fight as a big underdog. He controlled Williams from the onset, beating him to the punch and staggering him. The decision seemed clear to all at ringside. HBO’s Harold Lederman had Lara winning easily 117-111. Commentating for HBO, former champion Roy Jones was outraged, comparing the decision to his own Olympic debacle in Seoul, South Korea in 1988.

Commissioner Davis also wrote that before returning the three judges would undergo more “training”.

New York Post writer George Willis lambasted Davis’s decision to suspend the judges.
Willis wrote, “Nowhere in the statement did the NJSACB accept any blame in the matter. Instead, it made the three judges the scapegoats, branding them incompetent and scarring them for the remainder of their careers”. Willis also said there was no evidence of “bias, fraud, corruption or incapacity on the part of any of the judges.”

Not so fast Mr.Willis.

International agent and matchmaker Rick Glaser was outraged by the Williams victory. Decisions can be subjective as everyone in boxing knows. The Williams/Lara decision, in Glaser’s estimation, is the worse one he has ever witnessed.

"This was not three blind mice, but three corrupt rats“, he said. “One week later I’ve seen nothing that changes my opinion. I’ve not heard anybody say that Williams won that fight. Even the judge who scored the fight a draw was suspended. This was not a bad decision this was a robbery”, he added.

Glaser explained how Lara won the fight, “Lara was landing heavy bombs even though he’s not a knockout puncher. He’d step out seven to eight feet, and slide away, so Williams couldn’t hit him. Williams would throw three punches and hit air. He did this all night long. This fight did not take three professional boxing judges to determine a winner. A person with reasonable common sense could have told you won that fight.”

Promoter Dan Goosen came to the defense of his fighter but even he was in no mood to debate the decision.

Discussing the fight with Yahoo boxing writer Kevin Iole Goosen said, “My only comment, which I’ve said before and I’ll say again, is that I’ve got no problem with anyone who felt Lara won that fight”. Some have suggested bizarrely that Goosen was somehow involved in the shenanigans in Atlantic City.

Glaser finds this suggestion (as does this writer) ridiculous, “I do not believe that Dan Goosen was involved in any wrong doing . I’ve known Dan Goosen a long time, and he’s a great salesmen, but he’s not dishonest. Dan Goosen is a good man”, he said.

As for Paul Williams, is his career winding down? Glaser, not known for pulling his punches had this cryptic remark, “He’s on the back nine for sure. He’s heading towards the clubhouse”.

The way things are unfolding many could be on there way to that particular clubhouse.

The investigation continues….

The market did not do anything. It will either decide to take your money and move in the direction you choose, or not. You have to do more than what the market is controlled…

Cubanpip, you have made many excellent points in your thread. You have covered many of the intangibles and the mind being the most vital part of a successful trader. I can tell you have a strong work ethic, honest in your reporting with a dose of humility.
The metaphor you use with the remora makes someone think.
Keep up the good work!

Lulu, the market moves in a constant rhythm. The market does not have a functional, intellectual mind, therefore, it has no ability to “decide”, as you say. A good trader is bale to discern those rhythms and make trading decisions appropriately. If you really beleive the market can decide to take all your money, then the best thing for you to do is stay out of the market and never trade.

Hello amigo 4xpipcounter! Thanks for your kind words. I’m glad you found interesting what I had share here. HUMILITY for me is very important cause I believe that no matter what ANY person achieves, those achievements DON’T make you better than others. I mean, for me is proper to be proud of my achievements BUT that pride must be under control and is more like satisfaction on seeing the results I want to see after the hard work accomplished.

Best regards

That’s one of your points I agree with. I have a self-confidence that borders on ****iness. Yet, I also understand I am still just a student. I know if I don’t guard the psychological portion, the markets will be there in a hurry to put me in my place.
It’s the balance I need in my trading life.

Best regards
