This Week's Question: Do You Think Trading Has Changed Your Personality or Mindset in Any Way? If So, How?

Life has a way of shaping our mindset. Perhaps it’s through overcoming challenges or learning from unexpected failures.

In forex trading, the scene is no different. The rollercoaster of wins and losses can test your patience, discipline, and decision-making in ways you never saw coming. Some traders become more strategic and risk-aware, while others start seeing life itself through a different lens.

Do you think trading has changed your personality or mindset in any way? If so, how?

I’m not sure if it’s quite the same thing as “strategic” but I think I look at things in everyday life more statistically, somehow.

I’ve become more “numerical”.

I look at setbacks as inevitable and temporary and a necessary step on the journey toward something better.

So no complaints.

Same here, I think.

Maybe not "more strategic” but definitely more “risk aware”. Risk is all about statistics, isn’t it?

I’m more used to market mentality. If there’s stuff I want to buy, I’ll sometimes make an offer or “bid” (in places where most people won’t) or even sometimes “wait for the price to come to me.” :grinning:

I come from a professional horse racing background. Yes, I used to bet on horses for a living. My strike rate was less than 20% so I understand a bit about probability and losing runs.
I trade indices with a strike rate well above 50% so being a good loser is perhaps easier for me - than it would be for a lot of traders. Guess I’m lucky in that respect.

Your modesty and understatement (as in 1 or 2 other threads) speak volumes. Also good to see a reply from someone not banned immediately after posting here.

You have made your own luck.

I had the mixed fortunes of having psych degrees and some statistics training before even looking at trading, so I can say it hasn’t changed me one iota (nor even a hat). Possibly an omega, but not an iota.

I think it has quite significantly. Trading has changed both my personality and mindset in the sense that I have become more analytic and sharper and probably even more smarter as a person. And for mindset, I look at every possible outcome something could bring me. For instance: I have a plan which could either be a success or the opposite. I try to think of every possible outcome the plan could bring forth, and then think and plan out solutions and ways if these outcomes were too occur. So I know beforehand what to do if this or that happens. And I think if you’re in the fx game for the money then you’re missing out on a lot because you won’t learn anything and it will just be like a daunting job you have to do in order or make some cash. But if you grow to develop a love for the beautiful charts, the cool indicators, the simple maths, the numbers, the ratios, the trading journaling apps, the trading platforms, the currencies nicknames and everything else related to forex, then that’s when the real change, knowledge, joy and enthusiasm occurs. Because then you get up and trade not because you have to, but because you want to. And the feeling it’s exhilarating!

How could that be? How can you say trading hasn’t changed you one bit? I don’t like the word impossible but it’s almost impossible to be in contact with something for a significant amount of time without it affecting you regardless of its nature. Whether it’s a thing, people, environment, or anything! Unless you have been in trading for a very short period only then will it not affect you. And I mean a very short period. Because I also been in trading for like a year and half and it has changed me immensely.

Yes, of course. Sorry that my post misled you: I was trying to make a jocular reference to my being a professional psychologist. Not well-worded or well-placed; sorry.

That’s why it was misleading, it wasn’t well worded like you pointed out. Its cool though!

Trading has changed me a lot. It’s made me more patient and better at handling pressure, not just with trades but in life too. I’ve learned to be more strategic and cautious with risks. The highs and lows really force you to grow mentally.
