Everyone talks about how crucial self-discipline is in trading (AND in life) but how are you practicing this skill right now? If someone gave you just five seconds to answer this question, what would you say?
How did you practice self-discipline within the last 24 hours?
Mine would be… not opening that giant bag of kettle chips staring at me. Ha. What’s yours?
I’m afraid dragging myself out of bed and going to work every day uses up all my self-discipline, so there’s none left for any other aspect of my life!!
There is this unfortunate study that says willpower is actually not a finite resource. I refuse to believe it!
It appears ego depletion may be just another example of the way belief drives behavior. Thinking we’re spent makes us feel worse, while rewarding ourselves with an indulgence makes us feel better. It’s not the sugar in the lemonade that produces the sustained mental stamina, but rather the placebo effect at work.
Discipline is a crucial factor to achieving trading success. My initial discipline achievement is to make up my bed every morning. Gets me into the right mindset.
Well I’ve been practicing self-Discipline throughout this month, Not allowing myself to watch The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series until all the episodes finish airing. I so wanted to watch as soon as I saw it online, but trying and waiting until season one is finished,
As I understand there are parts at play, Will and WIllpower. I have to agree that “Willpower” is not finite it’s something we force ourselves to do, and sure we can get tired of it and eventually it may run out.
But Will is different, we don’t have to force things to happen at that point. But I also believe Willpower is the beginning, with enough willpower we can turn something into a will, and then it’ll be like a habit that happens without effort.
There is much to be said in favour (Sorry I’m English & I spell in English ) of Excess - Yes self indulgence and excess are valuable assets in life’s machinations !
Why then would one wish to deprive themselves of a Dyonissian plethora of self indulgence ?
I find self-discipline a challenge. Which is why I have always preferred very mechanical trading strategies. I know what to look for and what to do if I find it if I don’t find it I stop work on trading. I have no decisions to make in a position - I already made them.
Outside trading I keep a spreadsheet of the positive activities I have achieved each day. Some are mental, some are physical. Its hard achieving even a third of them, although I have abundant time.
I have bookmarked some Youtube clips on positive mental attitude and visualisation. I haven’t got round to watching them yet…
Self-discipline is a necessary part of trading, but it is not the only factor. Other things such as mental toughness and market knowledge also play a role in being successful at trading.
i learned not to push myself too hard ,especially when it comes to trading ,discipline have nothing to do with it,atleast not something to blame when you didn’t trade well
Before trading forex, I do not think I was as disciplined as I am now. It is all a matter of mindset. If you believe you can do it, if you believe you have to do it, you will dfinitely become disciplined. If you give in to your temptations, you will always remain distracted.
In order to become more disciplined, here’s what I did. First I literally wrote down all my strengths and weaknesses, and my temptations that I give into easily. Second, for each day, I make a to-do list for the previous night before going to sleep. Third, when doing work, I keep out of sight all distractions. I reward myself with something I like at the end of the day if I was able to complete all the tasks.
