Trailing Stops / Modify Order

Rooky Question, and probs why i lost money to a Money maker a year ago.

If is set a position, then go to modify it and choose level at 20 points

is that the same as

Right click a trade and select Trailing Stop @ 20

Cheers Pete

NO
Because when you modify a positions stops or take profits ( I assume we are talking about STOP LOSS here) you are not using a Trailing Stop loss

you need to understand that a TRAILING STOP loss will move automatically behind the price
(to select it… select CUSTOM and enter the amount of POINTS you want it to stay away from the price)

so… 20 points = 2 pips
if you wanted to trail by 20 pips, it would be 200 points and so on…

if you modify an order, you are modifying a stationary stop loss
if you are creating or modifying a TRAILING stop loss, it’s a moving Stop loss
and will get stopped out if price retraces to a number of pips that is larger than the trailing stop parameters

does that help

LOL

ps. did you mean Market-Maker

You’re confusing two different things, Martin.

Trailing stops do not necessarily move automatically behind the price.

You’re talking about an “automated trailing stop” as if it’s “a trailing stop” because you’ve guessed that that was the OP was referring to (maybe rightly, maybe wrongly - it doesn’t matter).

Don’t assume that the person asking is using the same platform as you.

Don’t assume that he understands your use of the terminology.

You’re doing exactly the same thing here that you did when you told someone that “A demo account will expire in 2 weeks no matter what” just because yours did, as that’s your broker’s policy.

You do this habitually.

It causes endless problems.

Please stop it.

Charlie,
Firstly i can’t stop something that i’m not aware of

Secondly , i have only ever known of 1 type of trailing stop
a trailing stop is automated

so if there is another kind , Please tell me
and , please explain how a trailing stop can be NON Automated

I mean… ok
you have the MT-4 Platform that has the trailing stop, i was referring to that, which is MT-4 dependant, not broker dependant
it’s a feature of MT-4

and we can off course Trail a stop loss manually by moving the line

is there another that i’m not aware of

as for
Don’t assume that the person asking is using the same platform as you.

i don’t, , but if the person doesn’t state what platform they are using , what do we do.
maybe it would be better if you asked them to state their platform to avoid confusion

i don’t,
that’s why my posts tend to be lengthy , because i try to explain and assume that they don’t understand the terminology

No, i actually never said that.
i have never said a demo expires after 2 weeks
i have never known a demo to expire after 2 weeks

I SAID, a demo expires after 30 days USUALLY i didn’t say no matter what.

and i have already covered this
just because yours did, as that’s your broker’s policy.

You do this habitually.
Naturally , everyone will have the experience they gain from their broker.
i have already stated that i have never known ANYONE to have a demo that went beyond 30 days.
so… it’s not just me

now, recently you guys brought it to my attention that they exist
and i recently had a look on Oanda and found that Oanda support non expiring demo’s
so… ok
you learn something new everyday

but mate, understand something…
a lot of people on this forum need to stop being so anal about precision all the time, because no one, Not even you, knows everything all the time… ok

everyone is at certain experience levels and everyone is trying to help everyone else by sharing their experience levels

THIS MEANS… not everyone is going to know everything because not everyone has been exposed to every brokers policy

Now. you need to be aware of that, instead of bashing someone down

Try showing some understanding… ok

how can you expect me to stop something that i’m not aware of
CAN YOU DO THAT ? No

so… be reasonable ok
but i didn’t say a demo expires in 30 days no matter what

i know myself
if i would have told a newbie that a demo expires in 30 days and i was the first poster after the OP.
and then you guys came on and said, ""Martin that’s not correct"
I WOULD THEN ASSUME that in different parts of the world it may be different

so i might say something like this

USUALLY a broker demo will expire in 30 days, but it depends on your broker

but i certainly didn’t say 2 weeks
and if i did, maybe it was late and i was tired, and i mis typed
but, in my experience i’m not used to demo’s expiring in 2 weeks, but instead, 30 days is the Norm that i’m used to

either way, we can lay this subject to rest, CAN’T WE
THE ASNWER IS
THEY EXPIRE BOTH IN 30 DAYS OR THEY DON’T EXPIRE

so… Now it’s answered
but if i recall correctly, and i don’t remember who said it, but someone said
No they don’t expire in 30 days

well… YES THEY DO… because i’m using it

so whoever said that, cannot support that claim because i personally am using a 30 day expiring demo.

Now… can we put this Demo subject to rest

I understand what else you have said , and i’ll be mindful
but you also have to be reasonable and not expect things that cannot be done… is that fair enough.
