What is a good trading system?

What can be considered a good trading system? I have back tested one system Im developing and the win/lose ratio is 50/50. Can it be considered a good system?
Thanks!

That depends on your risk:reward ratio.

If you are risking 20 pips, and have a target of 40 pips. Then yes, 50/50 is just fine.

If your risk:reward ratio is 1:1, so your stops are at 20 and your target is 20 then 50/50 will do nothing.

if risk:reward is flipped, so you risk 40 pips and your target is 20 pips…then 50/50 is bad.

thanks for your post mtandk0614
My reward/risk ratio is 2:1, and the timeframe is 15min, so i guess im fine, but i dont know…any other opinion?

Hi there,

A good trading system must have a risk/reward ratio that can make at least twice your risk, or better like three times your risk. For instance your risk is 20 pips, your profit potential must be at least 40 pips or 60 pips. Anything lower will not be that good as in the long run it will eat up your trading account.

Happy trading

A negative r/r can be offset, or at best balanced, by a good w/l.

A good trading system is one that you consistantly make money with and I mean consistant month after month!

As much as I hate to say it, a 50/50 trading system based only on 15 min chart is not only a bad trading system but its not even a trading system. You need to have a trading system based at least on a 4hr chart for day trading and a daily chart for swing trade. 15min charts is only good for pulling the trigger AFTER you have identify the direction or trend and the resistance/support level. I know this is a harsh comment but forex trading can be very brutal. It does not only grab your money but worse it can make you look very stupid to yourself…

Thank you all for your opinions!
LTN 7, you are right, im just learning everything i can, i guess i have to keep going

I know that this is a late post, but you could if you wish, look at my thread from page 33 on (post #325 onwards) where the matter of risk/reward and win/lose ratios are dealt with in detail and result in producing a very profitable outcome on the shorter time frames.
