Who are the forex market partisipants?

hey there,
I was wondering, who are the most numerus or most influciential group that trade in the forex markets?

according to a couple of sources the partisipants are;
Governments and Central Banks,
Commercial Banks and Other Financial Institutions ,
Consumers and Travelers,
Businesses,
Investors and Speculators.

does anyone know of any surveys on this topic or are we left to guess for ourselves. The reason i ask is because apparently the futures markets of the 1970s were dominated by technical trendfollowers, so that type of stratergy may have worked well for anyone looking to speculate in futures in the 70s.
who, and what statergies are most previlent in the forex markets today?

thanks for any input anyone has.

Hello Bob,

Yes, in fact there is a survey.

Every 3 years, the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) conducts a survey of the worldwide foreign exchange market, titled Triennial Central Bank Survey. The Survey is posted on the internet in .pdf format, and represents the best source we have for information on the size and structure of the FX market.

The most recent Survey was conducted in April 2013, and was published in two parts in September and December 2013. The so-called Preliminary Survey published in September presents an overview of the market and its various elements, and this is the part that most retail traders use for basic information.

To answer your question about FX market participants, I refer you to pages 5, 6, 7, and 19 of the Preliminary Survey

Study the text titled Turnover by counterparty on pages 5, 6, and 7.

Study Graph 2 on page 6. That graphic gives the percentages of the overall foreign exchange market traded by 3 broad categories of market participants: Reporting dealers, Non-financial customers, and Other financial institutions.

And, then, the graphic breaks Other financial institutions down into 5 sub-categories: Non-reporting banks, Institutional investors, Hedge funds and proprietary trading firms, Official sector, and Other.

Finally, study the table on page 19. It gives a description of each of the market participants included in Graph 2.

wow clint, youve really out done yourself. thanks.
