This post has been edited and has gone off on a different track with the addition of the link concerning the Black Panthers…

I would like to un-like the revised version of the post it but I can’t, the system won’t allow me to do that… Maybe you want to post new article links in a separate post?

Really crazy stat:

As of Monday, there have been 277 mass shootings in the U.S. this year, according to Gun Violence Archive.

Unfortunately, the government does not care about these types of shootings, been going on for over 50yrs now

Supreme Court limits reach of federal gun crime law

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Tuesday limited the reach of a federal statute that requires stiff penalties for crimes involving a gun.

The 7-2 decision united both conservative and liberal justices, though one dissenting justice compared the result to “Alice in Wonderland.” The justices said the law can’t be used to lengthen the sentences of criminals convicted of a specific attempted robbery offense.

The case before the justices involved Justin Taylor, who in the early 2000s was a marijuana dealer in the area of Richmond, Virginia. The government has said he sold large quantities of marijuana to other dealers who distributed it. In 2003 he and another man planned to steal money from a buyer, and during the robbery the accomplice fatally shot the man.

Taylor was charged with “attempted Hobbs Act robbery,” a federal crime punishable by up to 20 years in prison. He was also charged under a federal statute that outlines mandatory minimum sentences for using a firearm in connection with a “crime of violence.” Taylor pleaded guilty to both and was given a 30-year sentence, 10 years longer than he could have received for just the robbery charge.

People need to care, and I think they do in the moment, but if it’s not affecting them directly, it’s just another day.

Mass shootings like those you mentioned are not affected by this law.

U.S. Senate poised to move forward on first significant gun legislation in decades

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A bipartisan group of lawmakers released the first significant gun control legislation in decades on Tuesday, paving the way for the U.S. Senate to move to a vote this week, following two mass shootings that killed dozens of people and sent shock waves through a nation plagued by gun violence.

The 80-page bill includes provisions that would help states keep guns out of the hands of those deemed to be a danger to themselves or others and close the so-called boyfriend loophole by blocking gun sales to those convicted of abusing unmarried intimate partners.

After mass shootings at a New York grocery store and a Texas elementary school that authorities said were committed by teenagers, the legislation would allow states to provide juvenile records to the national background check system for gun purchases.

It’s something.

The law is targeting indiscriminate mass shootings witch is good but We still have multiple shootings in high crime areas on any given night

Mass shootings are incidents involving multiple victims of firearm-related violence. The precise inclusion criteria are disputed, and there is no broadly accepted definition.[2][3][4] One definition is an act of public firearm violence—excluding gang killings, domestic violence, or terrorist acts sponsored by an organization—in which a shooter kills at least four victims. Using this definition, one study found that nearly one-third of the world’s public mass shootings between 1966 and 2012 (90 of 292 incidents) occurred in the United States.[5][6] Using a similar definition, The Washington Post records 163 mass shootings in the United States between 1967 and June 2019.[7]

The United States has had more mass shootings than any other country.[5][8][9][10][11] Shooters generally either die by suicide afterward, or are restrained or killed by law enforcement officers. Mass shootings accounted for under 0.2% of homicides in the U.S. between 2000 and 2016.[12]

I don’t know who Amy Swearer is but I think she is worth listening to.

Good stuff. But who can afford to go to the therapist or get mental health assistance? I’m sure out in the rural towns, you’d have to drive an hour to find someone, if you can afford it.

I agree with that she’s saying, but she can be true, and it can still be true that guns are also a problem. It doesn’t have to be as simple as “guns are the problem” or “mental health is the problem” or “access to affordable healthcare is the problem” or “lack of the family unit is the problem”.

Weak men in America

Austin police stop potential mass shooting after man allegedly brandishes gun, fires, in downtown Zilker Park

An Austin man was arrested for allegedly firing a gun at multiple people in a downtown park following a Sunday drum circle earlier this month.

Joel Louis Garcia, 34, was arrested days after the incident on two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to jail records.

The victims told police that they got to know Garcia through the weekly drum circle at Zilker Park, but he got upset when a female refused to hang out with him. Zilker Park is a sprawling 358-acre area featuring the Barton Springs pool, a botanical garden, and miles of hiking trails in downtown Austin. It is enjoyed by thousands every day.

Both sides of the gun debate with a win.

Only took 30 years. The new legislation.

  • expands the background check system for prospective gun buyers under the age of 21,
  • gives authorities up to 10 business days to examine juvenile and mental health records.
  • It sets aside millions of dollars so states can fund intervention programs, such as mental health and drug courts,
  • lets states carry out so-called red flag laws that allow authorities to temporarily confiscate guns from any person found by a judge to be too dangerous to possess them.
  • It pours more federal money into mental health resources in communities and schools across the country, and it sets aside millions for school safety.
  • The legislation also toughens laws against the trafficking of guns and straw purchasing, the practice of buying a gun on behalf of someone barred from purchasing one.
  • it includes serious or recent dating partners in a ban on domestic abusers buying firearms, tightening what is known as the boyfriend loophole

Supreme Court strikes down New York gun law, expanding concealed carry rights

In a 6-3 ruling, the Supreme Court reversed a lower court decision upholding New York’s 108-year-old law limiting who can obtain a license to carry a concealed handgun in public.

Let’s see if this opens a can of worms for other gun restrictions to be overturned too. Crazy to think both of these happened in about the same week.

Came across this article on gun laws in Germany.

I didn’t know how many guns they had over there (5m), and how many people owned them (1m). They also mentioned that even though they have strict gun laws, there are something like 155 deaths a year from guns.

The interesting thing they’re discussing is make gun owners take a psychological test to get a gun

The solution, according to Heubrock, is developing new psychological tests that each applicant for a gun ownership card would have to pass. “The current tests are 20 years old, and any test, whether it’s an intelligence test or a personality test, has to be re-standardized after a time,” he explains.

Might be possible there. In the US, I don’t know if that’s physically possible, whether there are enough specialized people available to give those tests.

Germany does do random spot checks of gun owners to make sure they’re storing weapons correctly, and they do 5 year checks to see if the owner still needs the gun. I can’t see that happening here.
