More than 200 Bush, McCain, Romney alums endorse Harris for president, criticize Trump
More than 200 Republicans who previously worked for either former President George W. Bush, the late Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., or Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president in an open letter Monday obtained exclusively by USA TODAY.
The letter from alums of the three Republican presidential nominees prior to former President Donald Trump comes on the heels of a Democratic National Convention last week in Chicago that showcased Republican detractors of the GOP nominee. At least five former aides to former President George H.W. Bush also signed the letter, which has 238 signatures in all.
A similar group of about 150 anti-Trump former staffers of Bush, McCain and Romney pledged support for President Joe Biden in the 2020 election.
āWe reunite today, joined by new George H.W. Bush alumni, to reinforce our 2020 statements and, for the first time, jointly declare that weāre voting for Vice President Kamala Harris and Gov. Tim Walz this November,ā the letter reads. āOf course, we have plenty of honest, ideological disagreements with Vice President Harris and Gov. Walz. Thatās to be expected. The alternative, however, is simply untenable.ā

Trump appears to undercut his campaignās efforts over microphone rules at debate
Former President Donald Trump appeared to undercut his campaignās efforts to keep the same rules in place for his debate against Vice President Kamala Harris next month.
Trumpās team, according to a source familiar with the matter, would like for the microphones to be muted throughout the debate except for the candidate whose turn it is to speak, as was the case during the first debate with President Joe Biden.
But while Trump took aim at what he called the ābiasedā network Sunday evening ā complaining about reporter Jonathan Karl and a panel of āTrump Hatersā on his Truth Social platform ā he said Monday that he would prefer the mics to stay on.
āWe agreed to the same rules, I donāt know, doesnāt matter to me, Iād rather have it probably on, but the agreement was that it would be the same as it was last time,ā Trump said when asked by a reporter if he wanted the microphones muted during the debate when the candidate is not speaking.
The Harris campaign, for its part, is requesting that ABC and other networks seeking to host a potential October debate keep microphones on, according to a senior campaign official, marking a change from the June debate when the then-Biden campaign wanted microphones muted except when it was a candidateās turn to speak.
A top Harris spokesman said Monday that the campaign considered the mic issue āresolvedā after Trumpās comments.
Trump ādoesnāt care ā doesnāt matter to him whether or not the mics are hot, and frankly, that he would prefer if they were hot. So I think this issue is resolved,ā Harris campaign communications director Michael Tyler said during an appearance on MSNBC.
Tyler did offer a caveat: āUnless Donald Trump allows his handlers to overrule him, weāll have a fulsome debate between the two candidates with live microphones, where both candidates will be able to lay out their vision for where they want to take this country.ā

Georgiaās governor has asked his attorney general if he can remove state election board members after three right-wing members approved a series of alarming new rules.
Georgia governor inquires whether he can remove MAGA election board members after series of alarming votes
Republican Governor Brian Kemp asked Attorney General Christopher Carr for āguidanceā on whether he can remove members of the state election board, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
This comes after three right-wing members of the five-person board championed and passed a series of new rules that add extra requirements for county election boards to certify their results.
Under the rules passed this month ā less than 100 days before election day on November 5 ā county boards must make a āreasonable inquiryā before certifying the election. However, the rules do not define what an inquiry should involve or what āreasonableā means, according to the Journal-Constitution.
County election boards are also required to hold a meeting to verify their vote count on the Friday after election day, which is before the ballot return deadline for voters overseas and in the military.
The three right-wing members - Janelle King, Rick Jeffares and Janice Johnston - were recently praised by Donald Trump for championing new rules. The former president called them āpit bulls fighting for honesty, transparency and victory.ā
Trump has beem charged in Fulton County, Georgia, alongside his former attorney Rudy Giuliani and others with election interference charges. Trump has claimed that he lost Georgia to President Joe Biden due to widespread election fraud - which there is no evidence of.
Representative Lucy McBath, a Democrat, called the boardās new rules a āconcerted effort to subvert democracy and move us backward.ā
āWith passing this new rule, they are creating barriers to counting votes and certifying the elections so Donald Trump can once again attempt to throw our country into chaos,ā she said.
The Democratic Party has sued to challenge the rules, arguing that they could delay certification and lead to disputes over the vote. Kamala Harrisās campaign endorsed the lawsuit, according to the Journal-Constitution.
āCertifying an election is not a choice, itās the law,ā Quentin Fulks, principal deputy campaign manager for the Harris campaign, said. āA few unelected extremists canāt just decide not to count your vote.ā
At least 19 election officials across Georgia have refused to verify various election results since 2020. King, one of the three right-wing board members who advocated for the new rules, dismissed criticisms against them.
āIām going to continue to do whatās right and let the Democrats play the political games,ā King told the Atlanta newspaper. āThereās nothing weāre doing that will impact certification. If they have the proper information needed to certify, you wonāt see them even attempt to delay certification.ā
Georgia Republican Party Chairman Josh McKoon also said the rule changes are ācommon sense rules that ensure election integrity,ā according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
āIn no way do these rule changes interfere with anyoneās right to vote or cause undue burdens on election workers, but these steps will ensure transparency, accountability, accurate reporting and reconciliation,ā McKoon added.
