What about the Unity?

Will the UK soon be no longer a “United” Kingom?

Ever since boris johnson was “elected” by less than 0,1% of the UKs population to serve as the prime minister, voices became louder on the independence in the Scottish highlands.

The Northern Irish are also not very silent on the possibility of a united Ireland, in which the Republic of Ireland and the North which belongs to the United Kingom, form a new country rather than just the North beeing absorbed by the Republic of Ireland.

Are we witnessing the last years of the United Kingdom after it was one of the leading powers of Europe and one of the power in the world?

Are we witnessing history in the making?

Are we witnessing the final stages in the struggle of the UK, which started its collapse almost a hundred years ago when it was no longer considered an “Empire”?

Is the UK following the road which Spain and Portugal already walked, once beeing two kingdoms that spreads around the whole globe, military and economical superpowers for several centuries and today collapsed into two countries of 46 million and 10 million?

is history showing us, with the examples on spain, portugal and the UK, that Kingdoms in general are a obsolete creation and are doomed to fail sooner or later?

in general, are we in the time in which it has become normal for countries to seperate and form smaller nations across Eruope?

Czechoslovakia broke apart, Yugoslavia broke apart. Is the UK the next?

Once the UK has brexited and the “control over the border” has been reastablished, with European citizen (mostly of polnish descent) not allowed to settle in the UK. Where will the immigrants come from in future?

India?
Pakistan?
Africa?
Middle East regions?

what do you think?

Once you open the Pandora box, it is usually very hard to close.

There are plenty of examples of European regions that would rather be independent: Usually very prosperous ones. The North of Italy and Catalonia in Spain come to mind without even having to think much.

Will that ever happen? It is hard to say as usually central governments are EXTREMELY protective of their territories and will usually do whatever it takes to prevent the country from shattering in pieces.

However those developments certainly give regions a much stronger negotiation power and it wouldn’t surprise me to see the future bring an increase in the effective independence of the affected areas. We could witness a new political arrangement such as a Federation or something along those lines…

Who really knows what the future will bring?

Only God, and he is usually busy with more pressing matters, such as trading

Almost none of the traditional ideas of the countries of Europe are the same size, form, make-up and constitutions as they were 1, 2, 3, 5 or 10 centuries ago.

It will always be easier for politicians to argue the case for independence than for unification. And they have a vested interest in the process.

The only body standing in the way of multiple independence is the EU. The only political ideology against multiple independence is socialism. I’m not that happy with either.

As far as the UK is concerned, its a partnership, not an empire, If any partner wishes to leave, they are free to do so if they’re convinced it would be better for them.

Very true catalonia is the richest of spains regions and is eyeing an independence, north italy has similar ideas and is also the richest region of italy.

In the UK thou it doesnt look like its an economical factor as the GDP of england per person is more than double the GDP per person in northern ireland. Same, less of a difference thou, is the case for scotlands GDP beeing less than the average GDP per capita in england.

In this case it is not the richer regions dreaming of independence but the less developed ones.

Why? I dont know, maybe someone from the UK can explain this fundamental difference.

Its easy to see the EU taking a positive view of Balkanisation - assuming all the new mini-states then become/remain EU members. On economic grounds few might be truly independent otherwise.

Very foreseeable that its easier for the EU government to deal with (i.e. manipulate? bully? dominate?) 7 small regional-sized new states than 1 large nation run by an awkward PM or President or Chancellor. Italy and Germany come to mind before Spain in this regard.

That could be true, but wasnt a big factor for Brexit that the EU is too easily manipulating the UK?

One of the factors for scottish independence sounds very familiar when scottish politians say “we dont want the english to decide on our future”. This all sounds very similar.

Out of the perspective of a brittish unionist, can the point of view of a scottish independance supporter be understood?

Your point thou of EU supporting balkanisation is very false. In the 2014 scottish referendum the EU strongly supported UKs unity. The EU also strongly supported Spains unity when catalonia attempted to seperate.

Looks like a very strong cultural drive, no matter the consequences. Those guys probably just like being on their own  But you are right, nothing like knowing for sure from a certified UK citizen

Quite frankly, it looks a lot easier (preferable) for the EU to deal with a single country/entity rather than having to negotiate many separate deals with different (and often conflicting) smaller states/countries.

Besides, there is economical value on dealing with a large block, less so when dealing with several small ones, where many might end up actually out of the deal as there is no real value on including them all on the EU.

True. Any country has a veto right in the EU on any decition made. The more countries the more possible “veto” on every decision and the less decisions are beeing made, or too many compromises to suite the will of every “veto”-country.
