What does your setup look like? Your TIME TO SHOW OFF!

Well I’m new at this thing and have really come to love sitting at my computer these days. Even if it’s staring at charts all day, I find myself at peace. I’ve attached some pictures of my setup just for the fun of creating discussion. My challenge to all of you is to do the same. Take a picture; attach it to your post and tell us what you’re using.

For the new ones it’ll be great to see how experienced traders do things. How they live aside from what we assume behind a computer screen. Anything fancy you’d like to show off just because you have it? Feel free to post computer specs/hardware/software/etc. It will give good insight for the newbies and even some of those who have been around a long time! I’ll start off:

MY SETUP

Main Trading computer
- Core2Quad Q6600 custom build (Shuttle PC in corner)
- 4GB RAM, 750GB HD with a 1TB Backup External
- Runs windows Vista with Windows XP Pro in a Virtual Machine
- Broker: IBFX/Alpari on demos for now; hope to go Live soon

Extras
- Apple unibody 13" (I’m a photograher/designer parttime- student other half of the time)
- Home Custom VPS- more on this in a bit
- Wireless Router- we all need that
- 24" Widescreen Samsung monitor for the display
- 2 Tix Clock below the monitor (funky time teller- one is GMT other is EST)
- My prized item which GREATLY helps productivity and even trading is that funky gamepad (the programmable keys make it super easy to work with MT4). I’ve set it up so each of those buttons/joypad directions/keys have a function in MT4 to make trading life easier! If anyone has questions about this I’d be most happy to answer. HIGHLY reccommended!

The VPS- Virtual Private Server
That small MAC Mini looking sort of this is a server project I’m working on specifically for Forex. Instead of renting a server and paying monthly, why not just set one up at home. I’m currently working on a PDF Ebook for this also and will release that to the babypips community soon. I’ll keep you all posted.

It’s a 2Ghz Machine Pentium M. 1GB RAM. 40GB HD. Very simple. Enough to startup, run MT4, and shutdown when it’s told. All it’s needed for and very cost effective… Runs windows XP Pro.

If I receive lots of interest on this project I will create a separate thread for it. It involves being able to access the machine from anywhere in the world therefore allowing one to roam freely without having to install Mt4 on every computer they may or may not travel with. (Even sneaking some in trades at work and no installing anything on your work computer!)

Okay enough babble, let’s see yours!!

Post your pics and lets see something a little different from only pictures of charts on these forums  Not that their bad AT ALL

Good Luck trading, and I hope this thread grows to be fun to watch.

I reverse engineered metatrader and made it work on my old commodore 64

also use an IBM thinkpad with windows 3.1

it’s a little slow though so sometimes I just telegraph my orders in to the broker… that morse code can get a little tricky at times…

Haha! Are you able to trade on it through web browser or even desktop GUIs?!

TalonD

…ever thought of pigeons. You know the ones who come back to you after delivering your order to your broker. :D:D:D

GUI ? well the keyboard got a little gooey that time I spilled soda pop on it or as we say down south… Cocola

ha! homing pigeons or is that carrier pigeons? , why didn’t I think of that! See Cas that’s why you’re a pro and I’m still a noob :stuck_out_tongue:

Personally I use trained dolphins to deliver my trade orders. The only drawback is that my broker needs to have their office down by the waterfront…

I also suspect that the clever little animals are conspiring with my broker against me but it’s difficult to prove.

If all else fails, bribe with fish

How about mermaids…?

I think they got them in Sweden. :D:D:D

TalonD

Don’t know how you call them. Handy to have. lol

Just in case all those fancy fon and inet connections go bust.

You could use a bushman. They just keep running.

Might be a little quicker than practicing unless you get it done by one of the black fellas. They’re experts at it.

That’s all way too complicated. Me, I just grab a mitful of cash from under my mattress, put it in a suitcase, and take it to my local bank down the street where I exchange it for some funny money… then later exchange it back and return more back into to my mattress… I sleep very well…

ah sweet! that’s the best one, can I be your broker?

but seriously (yeah I know, what a party pooper) for the OP, I just use a simple HP laptop with windows xp, we tried vista at work and scrapped it. it just didn’t work well, poorly designed. I’d like to have big monitors and a big house to put em in… someday I will !

I use a dedicated server from 1and1 hosting

Dual core AMD Opteron 2.6GHz x 2
4.00 GB of RAM

I trade 28 currencies on the H1 chart so anything else would just freeze up!

Lol, how fancy! I just have 15inch MacBook Pro and parallels on it and that’s pretty much what I need, or, better said, that’s pretty much what I have! Though I’m handling it very well.

Is it a dedicated server you have running on your own or do you pay for hosting and remote into the desktop?

Interesting…

I have been thinking about using a VM on a MacBook for “on the road”.

What trading software you are using in your VM…?

Any hassles…generally speaking…?

Thx.

Hi Cas, I’ve run dealbook360 and Mt4, and both run smoothly. Honestly I’ve found windows runs better on mac  No problems at all.

Just once my platform freezed (dealbook360) but it was a broker problem.

Totally recommend it. It works really fast.

wrtm_19

Nice to hear that.

I suppose your using XP in Parallels. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Does your setup enable you to run MT4 and Dealbook360 in seperate VM’s side by side at the same time without slowing the Macbook in general and the VMs in particular…?

Thx again.

Yes I use XP in parallels. Nowadays I use Dealbook360 only, but I forgot to tell that there were times where I used to run Dealbook, Mt4 and FXCM Trading Sation all at the same time, same VM, without a problem.

Sometimes I run Dealbook on a Pc, demo account, just to try new things, and it takes forever to make anything, nothing compared with what I can do with the mac. I don’t know if this answers your questions since I didn’t know it was possible to run more than one vm.

I use Mac Os side by side for all other things, net surfing, read some books, skype, google earth, photo viewing all at the same time.

The Mac is also good for ‘Spaces’. You can split up different apps on desktops like linux it’s quite useful. I beleive it was dodgev83 on the forums who uses Ubuntu in that manner.

I am using a Dell Latitude c610, Pentium III with 1GHz CPU and 512MB RAM, mainly for my trading activities.
Also I have a MacBook and a desktop running Debian.

I have been contemplating building a desktop for forex and trading activities and have been wandering which would be better a huge large screen say 24" (or larger) so multiple windows can be open at once, or couple smaller screens with charts on one and other things like quotes and news on another etc.
Any thoughts and ideas on this?

Vista or Windows 7?

Thanks
Tom
