Mr. Trump has paid no federal income taxes for much of the past two decades.
In addition to the 11 years in which he paid no taxes during the 18 years examined by The Times, he paid only $750 in each of the two most recent years â 2016 and 2017.
The $5.2 million were estimated tax payments for tax he might owe (because he filed for extensions), but he got that back after actually filing or applied the payments to future yearsâ potential tax bills. So, he paid $750 in 2016 and 2017 after all was said and done.
It makes no difference how much tax Trump paid or how little as long as he followed the same law as everyone else.
Bearing in mind for at least half of the last 20 years the Democrats were in power, supposedly the more rigorous party in hunting out tax-dodgers. In any case, for most of the period Trump was not even in professional politics.
Its a fair bet that although we know about Trumpâs tax affairs, they are no different to any other businessman of comparable wealth of either political persuasion of which we know nothing.

Almost invariably, leftist organisations and voters are highly interested in the tax affairs of wealthy individuals and corporations. They attract much sympathy from the uninformed public when they highlight the techniques used to minimise tax payments and this general feeling of unease concerning how the tax system might be used or abused eases their way towards a radical tax revision.
Their greater aim of course is wealth re-distribution and they see a revised taxation system as a precise tool for this purpose.
The fact that they are rarely able to point to any illegal activities does not diminish their efforts because their efforts are not pointed towards a full obedience to the law, but towards a change of the entire system which everybody is already obeying.
But the promise is false. False because the hope is that taxation revision will lead to a more âequitableâ tax burden and lower taxes for the non-wealthy: whereas they actually wish to enlarge government spending which will lead to heavier taxation on all, leading to a moribund national economy.
