Single-party control in Washington is common at the beginning of a new presidency, but tends not to last long
Trump and Obama was the last two.
One-party control of Washington hands Trump enviable power
Donald Trump will begin his presidency in January with the rare luxury of control by his party of both chambers of Congress, raising the prospect that he might be able to dislodge some of the gridlock that has paralyzed Capitol Hill.
It will be the first time since Barack Obama suffered his midterm “shellacking” in 2010 at the hands of the Tea Party that one-party rule has returned to Washington. In the first instance, it raises the chances of Trump being able to fulfill some of his promises to his supporters – that he will act as an agent of change, putting, as he said in his victory speech on Wednesday morning, “millions of people to work”.
They call it the “budget deficit” - if you run a 25yr history in Tradingeconomics you will get a sense of how Govts (btw - not just the US) manage spending.
Back around 20 years since the taxpayer was the sole contributor to spending - since then investors have been taking up the slack:
The alternative is known as “austerity” - .i.e cut Govt spending - UK and others have tried this approach - problem is that current economics are tied to Govt spending - diminish one and the second follows.
Despite Trump’s border wall being a good idea, it had a few flaws, but instead of working out the flaws of the details, his Republican party didn’t stand up for him because they didn’t know how to work out the flaws of the details. Same with ending Obama care, they didn’t know what to do once it was over
The Republican party never considers the possibility of migrants flooding our borders if a democratic candidate is elected, so why not tackle the issue now before it becomes a problem in the future?
The republican party is now crying like a baby over border security and still has no clue about health care.
Here’s the search / raid everyone was waiting for.
Lawyer: DOJ searched Biden home, found classified documents
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department has searched President Joe Biden’s home in Delaware and located six documents containing classification markings and also took possession of some of his notes, the president’s lawyer said Saturday.
Bob Bauer, a lawyer for the president, said the Justice Department conducted the search at Biden’s Wilmington residence on Friday. He said it lasted about 13 hours.
The Justice Department “took possession of materials it deemed within the scope of its inquiry, including six items consisting of documents with classification markings and surrounding materials, some of which were from the President’s service in the Senate and some of which were from his tenure as Vice President,” Bauer said in a statement.
The prosecutors also “took for further review personally handwritten notes from the vice-presidential years,” he said.
The Biden document discoveries and the investigation into Trump, which is in the hands of special counsel Jack Smith, are significantly different. The Justice Department says Trump took hundreds of records marked classified with him upon leaving the White House in early 2021 and resisted months of requests to return them to the government. Biden has made a point of cooperating with the DOJ probe at every turn, though questions about his transparency with the public remain.
While I do stand corrected on the claim of control of Congress…
President Joe Biden will now face the herculean task of passing any initiatives through a House of Representatives controlled by the opposing party with an influential bloc of right-wing members.
In the House, the Republican party will get to set the legislative agenda and chair all the committees, which deal with issues like oversight, the economy and labour.
Republican control of the House will spell the end of the House committee that is investigating Mr Trump’s role in the 6 January 2021 attack on the US Capitol, when a horde of his supporters stormed Congress after the Trumpster made baseless claims of election fraud.
House Republicans have also said they would use their control of committees to investigate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a right-wing congresswoman from Georgia, has called for the House Republicans to impeach Joe Sliden, as the Democrats twice did to Donald Trump.
For the first two years of his presidency, Biden’s Administration had control of both chambers of Congress. His path to passing major priorities like climate change legislation was often rocky, but ultimately, Democrats were able to marshal votes and succeed with big-ticket items.
But now, Sleepy Joe has lost one chamber to the opposition party, which will not be inclined to give him major victories heading into a presidential election cycle.
It will make it all the more difficult for President Hiden to accomplish big priorities for the next two years.
@peterma, To simplify it for you since you don’t believe Left/Right ideologies exist…
It’s a huge swing back to the Right side of Politics over lets say the Belligerence, Ignorance and Economic Erosion of the Wrong side of politics…

has anything good come out of American politics in the last 12years? chaos and mayhem will inevitably lead to destruction. hopefully they figure that out.
As usual from you Leftist hacks… Low on ALL the relevant information… Did you really think I would allow you to get away without displaying the Biden Administration’s Chaotic fiscal management…
you are missing my point, the debt ceiling will be raised with major cuts to certain programs.
The US has never failed to raise or suspend its debt ceiling.
House Republicans gear up for a debt ceiling fight with the White House and Senate Democrats
Newly empowered GOP conservatives, backed by Speaker Kevin McCarthy, say they’ll use the debt ceiling to force budget cuts.
The political divide is deep and the stakes are high.
Ultraconservative lawmakers insist they don’t want the country to default, but their conditions for raising the debt limit are unlikely to be accepted by the Democratic-led Senate or President Joe Biden.
Republicans are on a collision course with the White House, which is demanding that Congress raise the debt limit without conditions.
Not missing your point at all!!.. In a proper debate… You don’t get to post the figures that suit you… ALL data up to the date of discussed event should be posted…
@SmallPaul, you appear disingenuous at best not to include the Debt Ceiling data up to January 2023… Since the up coming Debt Ceiling decision is what you have been babbling on about in the last few posts…
What are you on about here?? Read it back to yourself a few times out loud…
I never fail to rub my stomach and pat my head just before I reply to you…
Although you posted trump vs biden figures, my post was not about comparing the two presidents. The numbers are from past presidents who are no longer in office.
The final number for Biden has not yet been determined, he is still in office
no revelation there, to reduce the deficits, you either raise taxes or cut government spending.
The economy is affected by both.
U.S. House Speaker McCarthy says accepts Biden’s invitation to talk on debt limit
U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said on Friday he would accept an invitation from President Joe Biden to sit down and discuss how to raise the U.S. debt limit.
McCarthy, the top Republican in Congress, made the remark on Twitter in response to a comment from Biden that he was going to have a discussion with McCarthy on raising the ceiling.
Democrats reach agreement with GOP on House committee ratios
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) announced Sunday that Democrats have reached an agreement with House Republicans on the remaining standing committee ratios for the upcoming term.
“It is my expectation that no returning member of the House Democratic Caucus will involuntarily lose a seat related to an existing committee assignment, except for the House Committee on Ways and Means, as previously anticipated,” Jeffries said.
Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) previously vowed to keep prominent Democrats off certain committees, including keeping Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) off the House Foreign Affairs Committee and keeping Reps. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) off the House Intelligence Committee.
Jeffries said Democratic membership on the House Armed Services, Budget, Foreign Affairs, Judiciary and Small Business committees is a “direct inversion” from when the Democrats had the majority in the last Congress.
“These ratios are consistent with an inversion of those from the prior Congress where Democrats held a similarly sized majority, notwithstanding a few changes in overall committee size,” Jeffries said in a letter to colleagues that was obtained by The Hill.
Kiwi farmer’s blunt message to Jacinda Ardern after resignation…
An Auckland farmer has mowed a huge message into his paddock to be seen by those flying in and out of the city after the shock resignation of New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.
Rodney Ng shared the process of him carving out the “end of an error” message using GPS on his tractor on TikTok.
“Hey Cindy! The farmers of NZ would like to wish you all the best! We had our ups and downs. We don’t agree with a heck of a lot but that’s water under the bridge,” he wrote.
“We can all celebrate now. I thought we’d all send you a message, you were one of a kind, that’s for sure.”
Ex-New Zealand Prime Minister Cindy Ardern planned to tax farmers for methane output including that emitted naturally by livestock through burping and farting, and fertiliser-rich urine.
A New Zealand farmer was so thrilled about Jacinda Ardern resigning, he mowed this giant message into his paddock. (Article and Video here)
With his feet propped up in a jail cell, he can relax and act natural
Man who propped feet on Pelosi desk guilty in Jan. 6 case
WASHINGTON (AP) — An Arkansas man who propped his feet up on a desk in then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office during the U.S. Capitol riot was convicted on Monday of joining a mob’s attack on the building two years ago.
Prosecutors asked the judge to jail Barnett while he awaits sentencing. Justice Department prosecutor Alison Prout said the jury concluded that Barnett took a weapon into Pelosi’s office.
“We can only imagine what would have happened if (Pelosi) had been there at the time,” Prout said.
Barnett, 62, testified last Thursday that he was looking for a bathroom inside the Capitol when he unwittingly entered Pelosi’s office and encountered two news photographers. He said one of the photographers told him to “act natural,” so he leaned back in a chair and flung his legs onto the desk.
Stupid is what stupid does, and this guy was our president.
Trump Boast About ‘Cool Keepsake’ Classified Folders Is ‘Evidence From Heaven’: Lawyer
Former President Donald Trump’s recent startling boast about the “cool keepsake” classified folders he removed from the White House is “incriminating evidence from heaven,” a former Army prosecutor said Sunday.
Trump admitted in a post on Truth Social last week that he kept “hundreds of folders” marked “confidential” or “classified” — but claimed he didn’t keep the documents they had held.
Trump baselessly insinuated that the “Gestapo” — apparently the FBI agents who collected actual classified documents from Mar-a-Lago last year, according to photographic evidence — may have counted the empty folders as documents.
Authorities recovered 300 pages of classified documents, 48 empty folders marked as containing classified material and 42 folders that once contained documents that should be “return[ed] to staff secretary/military aide,” according to an initial inventory.
